The Effect of Pigments on the Plastic Product Properties

Abstract:

Tato dizertační práce se zabývá zkoumáním vlivu koncentrace komerčních barevných koncentrátů na výsledné vlastnosti plastového dílu. Pro experimentální účely byly zvoleny dva polymerní materiály. Jedním byl zástupce amorfních materiálů a to polykarbonát prodávaný pod obchodním názvem Lexan 923a a druhý zvolený materiál byl zástupcem ze semikrystalických materiálů polypropylen distribuovaný pod obchodním názvem Mosten. Tyto materiály se běžně používají v průmyslové praxi a zpracovávají se technologií vstřikování. Pro zkoumání vlivu barevných koncentrátů byly vybrány tři komerční barevné koncentráty od firmy Lifocolor pro barvení polykarbonátu a dva barevné koncentráty od firmy Maxithen pro barvení polypropylenu. V první části disertační práce byl zkoumán vliv barevných koncentrátů na mechanické vlastnosti polymerních materiálu. Důraz byl kladen na provedení tahové zkoušky a rázové houževnatosti. Z provedené tahové zkoušky byly vyhodnocovány parametry meze pevnosti, Youngova modulu pružnosti a poměrného prodloužení. Z testu rázové houževnatosti byly vyhodnocovány parametry součinitele vrubové houževnatosti a maximální síly. Další část byla zaměřena na měření kolorimetrických vlastností a kvantifikovaní barevného odstínu, včetně stupně probarvení pomocí kolorimetrického zařízení. Následně byl kladen důraz na měření rozměrové stability, a sice jakým způsobem koncentrace barevného koncentrátu v polymerním materiálu tuto stabilitu ovlivní. Následně byla navrhnuta a vyrobena vstřikovací forma na výrobu zkušebních těles pro měření smrštění. Na těchto zkušebních tělesech byl ověřen charakter rozměrové stability a smrštění v hlavním a vedlejším směru. V další části byly zkušební vzorky podrobeny skenovací elektronové analýze. Výsledky z této analýzy poukazují především na velikosti pigmentových částic, které jsou součástí barevného koncentrátu a také jak je homogenně rozptýlen uvnitř směsi. V poslední řadě bylo otestováno, jakým způsobem ovlivní přítomnost barevného koncentrátu index toku taveniny polymerních materiálů. Bylo prokázáno, že barevné koncentráty mají statisticky významný vliv na mechanické vlastnosti, ovlivňují kolorimetrické vlastnosti a také rozměrovou stabilitu. Avšak tento vliv se u různých barevných koncentrátů mírně liší. Jako optimální koncentrace z hlediska uvedených vlastností se dá považovat koncentrace 3 % barevného koncentrátu.

Abstract:

This dissertation thesis deals with the influence of the concentration of commercial color concentrates on the final properties of plastic part. Two polymeric materials were chosen for experimental purposes. One was a representative of amorphous materials; namely polycarbonate sold under the trade name Lexan 923a. The other material was a representative of semi-crystalline polypropylene distributed under the trade name Mosten. These materials are commonly used in industry and they are usually processed by injection technology. Three commercial color concentrates from Lifocolor company for coloring polycarbonate and two color concentrates from Maxithen company for coloring polypropylene were chosen in order to investigate the effect of color concentrates. These above mentioned color concentrates are recommended by manufacturers for dyeing selected polymeric materials. In the first part of the thesis, the influence of color concentrates on the mechanical properties of polymeric materials was investigated. Emphasis was placed on measurement of tensile test and impact strength. The tensile test measurements were evaluated by the parameters of ultimate strength, Young's modulus and elongation. Parameters of notch toughness coefficient and maximum force were evaluated from impact test. The next part was focused on the measurement of colorimetric properties and quantification of the color shade, including the degree of coloring using a colorimetric device. The emphasis was also placed on measuring the dimensional stability. It means how the concentration of the color concentrate in the polymeric material affects this stability. Subsequently, an injection mold for the manufacture of shrinkage test specimens was designed and manufactured. The character of dimensional stability and shrinkage in the main and minor directions was verified on these test specimens. In the following part, the test samples were subjected to scanning electron analysis. The results of this analysis show pigment particle size that means the homogeneity of pigments dispersion within the mixture. Lastly, the influence of a colored concentrate presence on the melt index of polymeric materials was tested. Color concentrates have been shown to have a statistically significant effect on mechanical properties, affect colorimetric properties and dimensional stability. This effect differs slightly from color concentrate to color. A concentration of 3% of the color concentrate can be considered as the optimum concentration with respect to said properties.
