Noninvasive determination of steroid hormones and its implication in behavioural experiments

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá neinvazivními metodami měření steroidních hormonů, které nám, díky schopnosti sledovat dlouhodobé trendy hladin hormonů, mohou spolu s daty z vhodně zvolených behaviorálních experimentů přinést ucelený pohled na dopad působení hormonů na chování zvířat. Ačkoliv existují určité faktory ovlivňující přesnost neinvazivních metod, vhodně zvoleným postupem uchovávání, zpracování a následné analýzy vzorků a patřičnou validací metod pro každý druh i pohlaví lze dosáhnout přesných a biologicky relevantních výsledků. Cílem této práce je pomocí literární rešerše shromáždit ucelené informace o dané problematice a připravit tak teoretický základ pro další studium v tomto oboru. Součástí práce je i zapojení do experimentální části behaviorálního projektu a osvojení laboratorních dovedností.

Abstract:

In this thesis I study non-invasive methods of measuring steroid hormones, which, thanks to their ability to monitor long-term trends of hormone levels and in combination with data from appropriately selected behavioral experiments, may provide a comprehensive view on the impact of hormones to animal behavior. Although there exist some factors affecting the accuracy of non-invasive methods, with properly chosen storage methods, processing and subsequent analyses of the samples, together with appropriate validation of methods for each species and sex, under study we can achieve accurate and biologically relevant results. The aim of this thesis is to search available literature in order to gather comprehensive information on the topic and thus to prepare a theoretical basis for further studies in this field. The work also includes active participation in the experimental part of a behavioral project and learning laboratory skills.
