When design meets resident: Urban rhythms, planning of a public space and the elders in Brno.

Abstract:

In their everyday travels in the city, its inhabitants constantly adapt to certain institutionally and materially maintained settings of a public space. It often determines their paths so as the timing and tempo of their motions. Thus, not only while walking people tend to choose certain ways in accord with it; they slow down or speed up in certain segments of a walkway, somewhere feel comfortable, and vice versa. This diploma thesis deals with a polyrhythmicity of an urban space and an extent to which the residents contribute to it while working with senior citizens with a high level of mobility. Using a go-along technique and a group discussion author engages the residents of an urban space in Brno in the discussion. The empirical part of the work characterizes to what intensity is the temporality of certain spaces in Brno affected by its design, whether we realize it, and if we subsequently participate in the process of district plan recreation. The text is trying to research the urban space and its temporal dimension. Its attention is then turned to the way the city dwellers interpret it in their everyday world and connects sociology of the city and time.

Abstract:

Počas každodenného pohybovania sa v meste sa jeho obyvatelia neustále prispôsobujú inštitucionálne a materiálne podmieneným ´nastaveniam´ verejného priestoru. Tie často predurčujú dráhu či samotné načasovanie pohybu a tempa jeho užívateľov. Nielen počas chôdze sa ľuďom preto stáva, že na ich základe volia určité cesty, v istých úsekoch spomaľujú alebo zrýchľujú, niekde je im príjemne a naopak. Táto diplomová práca sa zaoberá práve polyrytmikou mestského priestoru a mierou, do akej do nej spoločne prispievajú mestskí rezidenti v dôchodkovom veku a bez obmedzenia mobility. S použitím techniky go-along a skupinového rozhovoru autorka zapojuje v empirickej časti obyvateľov mestského priestoru v Brne do diskusie. Charakterizuje do akej miery je vnímanie rytmu miesta ovplyvnené týmito nastavenými kvalitami, do akej miery si to uvedomujeme, volíme určité trasy - a či následne participujeme na procese ich utvárania. Text sa pokúša o výskum urbánneho priestoru a jeho temporálnej dimenzie. Svoju pozornosť pritom upína na spôsob akým skúmanú rytmiku mesta interpretujú v ich každodennom svete rezidenti a prelína tak sociológiu mesta a času.
