Jaroslav Čermák and his painting The Abduction of a Hercegovenian Woman

Abstract:

Předkládaná bakalářská diplomová práce pojednává o jednom z nejvýznamnějších děl českého umělce 19. století Jaroslava Čermáka. Obraz Únos Černohorky se stal vrcholem malířovi rané jihoslovanské tvorby. Dílo vzniklo v reakci na soudobou situaci na slovanském jihu, Balkáně. První jihoslovanské období umělce se vyznačovalo zájmem o ženu. Jeho tvorba byla ve své době populární, velmi zaujala soudobé diváky jak ve Francii, tak v Čechách. V každém z prostředí byl však Únos Černohorky vnímán z jiného pohledu poplatného určitým zájmům. Pochopení Čermákovy tvorby v kontextu soudobé západní orientalistické malby je klíčové pro správný pohled na jeho obrazy vyznačující se specifickým charakterem.

Abstract:

This bachelor diploma thesis deals with one of the most important works of czech artist Jaroslav Čermák. The painting The Abduction of a Hercegovenian Woman became the apex of the painter of early South Slavic art. The painting was created in response to the current situation in the Slavic south. The first South Slavic period of the artist was characterized by interest in the woman. His work was popular in his time. Contemporary audiences both in France and in Bohemia were interested in his works. In each milieu, however, The Abduction of a Hercegovenian Woman was perceived from another point of view for certain interests. Understanding of Čermák's work in the context of contemporary Western oriental painting is crucial to the proper view of his images distinguished by a specific character.
