The Crisis of Zionism in the American Jewish Community

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je zaměřená na historický vývoj vztahů mezi americkými Židy a Izraelem a popisuje události, které definovaly jejich aktuální stav. Zaměřuje se na tzv. „krizi podpory“, která označuje neochotu mnohých amerických Židů nadále podporovat politiku Izraele. V první kapitole se zaměřujeme na koncept Sionismu a na události, které byly klíčové při jeho utváření. Druhá kapitola přináší komplexní obraz Sionismu v USA před vznikem státu Izrael, přičemž zdůrazňuje důležitost zapojení amerických Židů do procesu vzniku. V třetí kapitole mapujeme americko-izraelské vztahy v období roku 1948 - 1990. Ukázalo se, že během prvních třech desetiletí existence Izraele byli Židé v USA jednotní v podpoře izraelské politiky. „Krize podpory“ se objevila v 80. letech 20. století jako zklamání amerických Židů z násilné reakce izraelské armády na povstání v Palestině. Čtvrtá kapitola rozebírá vývoj Izraelsko-palestinského mírového procesu na přelomu tisíciletí a zapojení americké židovské levice do současného politického dění v americké komunitě. V závěru kapitoly popisujeme vztahy amerického prezidenta Baracka Obamy a izraelského předsedu vlády Benjamina Netanjahua. Zaměřujeme se na neschopnost amerického prezidenta oponovat politice izraelského předsedy vlády. V páté kapitole rozebíráme aktuální stav vztahů mezi USA a Izraelem a zdůrazňujeme, že mladí američtí Židové sehrávají důležitou roli při formování těchto vztahů. Analyzujeme tři aktuálně události, které pobouřily americké Židy (projev Netanjahua před americkým Kongresem, participace Naftaliho Bennetta na Saban Forum a parlamentní volby v Izraeli v březnu 2015. V závěrečné kapitole přinášíme zjištění, že aktuální události vedou k odcizování amerických Židů od Izraele.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to outline the history of relationship between American Jews and Israel, bringing it up to date by outlining the issues that shape its current state. It takes a close look at the “the crisis of support” (an unwillingness of many American Jews to support Israeli policies), which is now growing more important in the discourse of American Jewry. The thesis begins with the concept of Zionism as such, focusing on the realities that were crucial for its formation. The second chapter offers a complex picture of Zionism in the USA before the establishment of Israel. In this chapter, I stress the importance of American Jewish involvement in the formation of Israel. The third chapter of the work maps the state of the U.S.-Israel relationship in the period 1948-1990. In this chapter, I conclude that the first three decades of Israel’s existence marked an unwavering American Jewish support. I later argue that the “crisis of support” firstly appeared in 1980s when many American Jews felt that the Zionist dream was betrayed by the brutal reaction of Israeli forces to the Palestinian uprising. The fourth chapter illustrates the development of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process at the turn of the centuries. It later focuses on the emergence of the American Jewish left, which is currently playing a very distinctive role in the current American Jewish policies. The end of the chapter documents the relationship of the U.S. president Barrack Obama and the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, stressing Obama’s inability to oppose Netanyahu’s policies. The fifth chapter is devoted to the latest events that determine the current state of the U.S.-Israeli relationship. It points out the importance of young Jewish Americans in the formation of the American Jewish opinion. It also examines three recent events that galvanized the American Jewry (Netanyahu’s speech to Congress, Naftali Bennett’s participation at Saban Forum and 2015 Israeli legislative election). In the final chapter, I conclude that the current events are resulting in a greater alienation of American Jews from Israel.
