A Chapter on History of Human Capital: War and Post-War Germany and its Personal Continuity

Abstract:

Tématem této práce je kontinuita hlavních nositelů ekonomické a politické moci v Německu mezi obdobím státního dirigismu „Třetí říše“ a obdobím tržního hospodářství Spolkové republiky Německo. V první části práce jsou zkoumány souvislosti „Hospodářského zázraku“: vývoj makroekonomických ukazatelů, význam lidského kapitálu, kontinuita elit. Ve druhé části je zkoumána kontinuita elit ve dvou významných sektorech německého poválečného hospodářství, bankovnictví a těžkém průmyslu. Práce v této části rovněž přináší detailní studie životopisů významných představitelů zkoumaných odvětví. Ty ilustrují kontinuitu elit a její vliv na poválečnou německou ekonomiku.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the continuity of German economic elite between the period of state dirigisme of the “Third Reich” and the free market period of the Federal Republic of Germany. The first part of this thesis analyses main macroeconomic indicators as well as the theories of human capital and elite continuity and their relation to the “Economic Miracle”. The second part analyses the elite continuity in banking and heavy industry, which are some of the most important sectors of German economy in the post-war era. This part also brings a detailed study of the curricula of the most important representatives of each sector to illustrate the influence of elite continuity on post-war German economy.
