Using Comics in TEFL: Creative Classroom Project

Abstract:

Tato magisterská práce se zabývá využitím média komiksu v kontextu výuky anglického jazyka jako cizího jazyka (TEFL). Práce nabízí možné metodologické přístupy pro efektivní včlenění média komiksu ve výuce psaní v angličtině. Tato práce se konkrétně zabývá účinky na motivaci studentů ke psaní, které může začlenění kreslení do úkolů na psaní mít. Práce představuje přehled teoretických textů, které se zabývají problematikou výuky psaní v EFL kontextu se zaměřeném na strach studentů ze psaní a jeho možné důvody. Teoretická diskuze potom představuje začlenění kreslení do úkolů na psaní jako možnou strategii pro zmírnění úzkosti ze psaní u studentů a pro podporu jejich vnitřní motivace ke psaní. Práce následně představuje projekt, navržený na základě těchto diskuzí, který se zabývá procesem tvorby komiksu v rámci výuky angličtiny na českých středních školách. Hlavním cílem tohoto projektu je nabídnout kreativní tvorbu multimodálního textu jako alternativu k psaní knižní či filmové recenze. Toto zadání představuje typický úkol, se kterým se studenti v hodinách angličtiny setkávají. Projekt se především zaměřuje na rozvoj vnitřní motivace ke psaní v angličtině u studentů a snaží se podporovat rozvoj autonomního učení studentů.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the use of comics as a medium in the context of teaching English as a foreign language and discusses the possible methodological approaches to an effective incorporation of comics in teaching English writing. The thesis specifically focuses on the effects of the incorporation of drawing in typically writing tasks on students’ motivation to write. The thesis presents a review of theoretical works dealing with the issues in teaching/learning writing in the EFL context with a specific focus on students’ writing apprehension and its possible causes. This theoretical discussion introduces the incorporation of drawing in writing tasks as a strategy to lower students’ writing apprehension and cultivate their intrinsic motivation to write. Based on these discussions, the thesis presents a project focused on the process of comics creation designed for Czech secondary school English students. The main aim of the project is to offer a creative composition of a multimodal text as an alternative to writing a book/film review which is one of the common English writing tasks for secondary school students. The project primarily focuses on the cultivation of students’ intrinsic motivation in writing tasks and aims to support the development of students’ autonomous learning skills.
