Lesser Known Indian Wars in the American Southwest

Abstract:

This diploma thesis follows the lesser known Indian wars of the American Southwest. Before the description of the particular conflicts, the thesis concentrates mainly on the geographical conditions, combat techniques and weapons commonly used by the Indians in these wars, as these factors influenced the course of the wars a lot. Nevertheless, the most important factor that influenced the wars and the Indians' attitudes towards it is also their traditional ways of life, culture, habits and customs. And that is also why to create a solid background for the further description of the most Important Indians conflicts with the whites, a lot of space is given to a description of those factors. After the detailed description of the most important conflicts between the particular Indian tribes and white settlers, including Spanish, Texans, Americans and Mexicans, the thesis concentrates on the result of the wars, the forced Indian removal to reservations and the further imposition of the white culture on the Native Americans, which totally ruined their traditional ways of life.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá méně známými indiánskými válkami amerického Jihozápadu. Před popisem válečných konfliktů samotných věnuje značnou pozornost popisu faktorů, které ovlivnily průběh jednotlivých válek, a to zejména geografickým podmínkám, válečným technikám a zbraním, které pro své válčení indiáni používali. Nicméně za nejdůležitější faktor, jež do značné míry ovlivnil způsob boje domorodých Američanů a jejich vztah k válce vůbec, jsou považovány sociokulturní podmínky, tradice, zvyky a obyčeje jednotlivých kmenů, kterým se práce detailně věnuje za účelem poskytnout čtenáři ucelenou představu o pozdějším průběhu válek. Práce se dále zabývá popisem jednotlivých nejvýznamnějších válečných konfliktů, jednotlivých kmenů s bílými osadníky Španěly, Texasany, Američany a Mexičany. Poté je pozornost soustředěna na nucený odsun indiánů do rezervací, násilnou asimilaci s bílým obyvatelstvem, jeho kulturou a zhoubným vlivem, jež vedl k destrukci tradičního způsobu života nativního obyvatelstva.
