The Symbiogenesis Theory and the Gaia Theory: Altenative Biological Theories in Environmental Thinking

Abstract:

Práce se pokouší vymezit teorii symbiogeneze a teorii Gaia vůči hlavnímu proudu současné biologie, neodarwinismu a prozkoumat vztah těchto teorií k antropocentrismu i jejich možný potenciál pro tvorbu environmentální etiky. Přináší popis obou teorií včetně historického vývoje a hledá odlišnosti od neodarwinismu v pojetí evoluční teorie a popisu vlastností života. Srovnává, jaké odpovědi nabízejí na otázky, co je člověk a jaké je jeho místo v přírodě. Zabývá se rovněž tématem, jaký princip přisuzují přírodě za vlastní, zda boj nebo spolupráci, sobectví nebo altruismus, a rozebírá společenský kontext vědy. Práce dochází k závěru, že obě vybrané teorie jsou alternativní vůči neodarwinismu a že mohou poskytnout jiná východiska pro environmentální etiku směřující k ohleduplnějšímu vztahu k mimolidskému světu a pro vytvoření osvíceného antropocentrismu. Teorie Gaia a teorie symbiogeneze kladou důraz na spolupráci, propojení veškerého života v čase i prostoru, aktivní roli organismů v evoluci. Otevírají důvody pro spatřování hodnoty ve sdílení, spolužití, otevřenosti a komunikaci.

Abstract:

The thesis defines the position of the symbiogenesis theory and the Gaia theory – two biological theories that provide alternatives to the current mainstream biological thought – and discusses the relationship between these two theories and anthropocentrism, as well as their possible role in development of environmental ethics. It describes both theories and their historical development, and looks at differencies between them and neodarwinism in the approach to evolutionary theory and description of the character of life. The thesis compares their answers to questions such as what is the man and its place in nature. Also, it deals with the issue of what the respective theories see as the key principle of nature – competition or cooperation, selfishness or altruism – and with the social context of science. It concludes that both theories provide an alternative to neodarwinism, and that they can serve as starting point for environmental ethics striving for more respect to non-human world and an enlightened antropocentrism. Gaia and symbiogenesis theories put an emphasis on cooperation, interconnection of all life in time and space, and an active role of organisms in evolution. They offer reasoning for placing a value on sharing, coexistence, openess and communication.
