Short-term colonisation of restored brooks by benthic macroinvertebrates: the case study from the Vltavský Luh (NP Šumava)

Abstract:

Restorations are an effective tool for improving the ecological state of streams and restoring the diversity of aquatic communities. Success of restorations is usually evaluated by colonisation by benthic macroinvertebrates, however, these measures often remain without expected results even after years of research. Success of stream restorations does not depend solely on the stream heterogeneity, which can be reached artificially, but also on many other factors, like availability of suitable colonists, water quality or appropriate design of the restoration. The subject of study in this bachelor’s thesis is the colonisation of restored brooks in the Šumava National Park by the mayfly (Ephemeroptera), stonefly (Plecoptera) and caddisfly (Trichoptera) larvae during the first year after the restoration. Newly established communities were compared to communities that previously inhabited the regulated streams and to aquatic communities in the vicinity. Mainly abundance, species richness and species composition of the streams were evaluated. For the purposes of this thesis, data from 176 samples collected from three restored streams and two reference rivers in 2013-2016 were used (the streams were not restored all at once). One year is a period too short for an objective assessment of success of the restorations based on colonisation by macroinvertebrates, as it is a long-term process. Even so, results from the first year indicate, that the streams were colonised very quickly, and newly formed communities are changing continuously. A few days after the restorations, 0-16 species were found in the new stream beds, and just three months later it was nearly twice as many, 15-27 species. After one year, the species richness at some sites was comparable to natural streams and the number of species with specific ecological requirements was increasing (e.g. species from families Heptageniidae, Taeniopterygidae, Hydropsychidae). Return of these species is still very slow, but we are expecting further dynamic progress in the future. Depending on multiple factors, it may take years before communities of the restored streams will start to resemble communities of the natural streams. Nevertheless, restorations can significantly improve the quality of the streams and the surrounding land.

Revitalizácie sú účinným prostriedkom na zlepšenie ekologického stavu tokov a obnovu diverzity vodných spoločenstiev. Úspešnosť revitalizačných opatrení je často kvantifikovaná kolonizáciou makrozoobentosom, no napriek dlhoročnému výskumu tieto opatrenia neprinášajú vždy očakávané výsledky. Úspešnosť revitalizácií nezávisí len na samotnej heterogenite toku, ktorá sa dá do určitej miery vybudovať umelo, ale aj na ďalších faktoroch, od dostupnosti vhodných kolonizátorov, cez kvalitu vody, po vhodný dizajn revitalizácie. Predmetom štúdia v tejto bakalárskej práci je kolonizácia revitalizovaných horských potokov v Národnom parku Šumava larvami podeniek (Ephemeroptera), pošvatiek (Plecoptera) a potočníkov (Trichoptera) v priebehu prvého roka po revitalizácií. Novovzniknuté spoločenstvá boli porovnané so spoločenstvami, ktoré osídľovali pôvodné regulované korytá a so spoločenstvami okolitých biotopov. Boli hodnotená najmä na základe početnosti, druhovej bohatosti a druhovej skladby. Pre účely tejto práce boli použité dáta zo 176 vzoriek odobraných z troch revitalizovaných potokov a dvoch referenčných riek medzi rokmi 2013 a 2016 (toky neboli revitalizované naraz). Jeden rok je krátka doba na objektívne posúdenie úspešnosti revitalizácie podľa kolonizácie, keďže ide o dlhodobý proces. Výsledky z prvého roka ukazujú, že potoky boli osídlené veľmi rýchlo a novozaložené spoločenstvá sa postupne menia. Len pár dní po napustení nových korýt sa v nich našlo 0-16 druhov, tri mesiace neskôr to bolo približne dvakrát toľko, 15-27 druhov. Po roku je druhová bohatosť na niektorých lokalitách porovnateľná s prirodzenými tokmi a pribúdajú aj druhy, ktoré majú špecifické nároky na prostredie, ako napríklad druhy z čeľadí Heptageniidae, Taeniopterygidae, alebo Hydropsychidae. Ich návrat do tokov je zatiaľ veľmi pomalý, no do budúcna očakávame ďalší dynamický vývoj. V závislosti od mnohých faktorov môže trvať roky, kým sa spoločenstvá revitalizovaných tokov začnú podobať na tie prirodzené. Revitalizácie však môžu napriek tomu výrazným spôsobom zvýšiť kvalitu vodných tokov aj okolitej krajiny.
