Childhood in Anglophone Caribbean Literature

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá dětstvím v anglofonní karibské literatuře a analyzuje následující knihy Growing up Stupid under the Union Jack, The Year in San Fernando a Christopher, kde každá z nich popisuje odlišné životy dětí, což umožňuje názorně poukázat na rozdíly v dětských osudech a jejich životních úsilí. Po přečtení knížek jsem zhodnotila aspekty společnosti, vzdělávání a rodiny jako nejvíce ovlivňující faktory v průběhu dětství. Za prvé má práce detailně vykresluje zmiňované faktory a to za účelem ilustrace odlišného zázemí a za druhé analyzuje vliv zmiňovaných faktorů na hlavní postavy.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the topic of Childhood in Anglophone Caribbean literature. The thesis analyses the following books Growing up Stupid under the Union Jack, The Year in San Fernando and Christopher which depict different child lives and enable to illustrate the contrast of different children's destinies and their struggle through life. Through the reading I find that the aspects of society, education and family are the most influential ones during childhood. The first aim of the thesis is a detailed depiction of the mentioned factors to illustrate the diverse background and secondly to analyse the influence of the three declared aspects on the main characters.
