Post-drought changes in population structure of freshwaters shrimp (Gammarus fossarum) in stream

Abstract:

Globální změna klimatu mění charakter průtoků zvláště na malých tocích, a pravděpodobně souvisí i s jejich častějším vysycháním, které ovlivňuje populace vodních organismů. Jedním ze silně ovlivněných druhů je Gammarus fossarum, který obývá velkou část toků České republiky. V této práci jsem porovnala populace z 5 párů permanentních a vysychavých lokalit s podobnými charakteristikami, abych zjistila, jakým způsobem se blešivci s vyschnutím vyrovnávají. Populace blešivců na vysychavých lokalitách měly po znovuzaplavení nižší abundance, převažovali zde samci nad samicemi a bylo zde méně juvenilů než na permanentních lokalitách. Mezi všemi porovnávanými páry lokalit (vysychavá/nevysychavá) byly signifikantní rozdíly ve velikostním složení populací. Na nevysychavých lokalitách byli četnější menší juvenilní jedinci, zatímco na vysychavých dominovali větší adultní jedinci (zejména samci), kteří pravděpodobně zabezpečovali první fázi rekolonizace. Ještě dva měsíce po zaplavení byly na populacích vysychavých lokalit znatelné rozdíly v jejich velikostním složení oproti lokalitám permanentním. To naznačuje, že blešivec potoční má potenciál pro bioindikaci nedávného vyschnutí toku.

Abstract:

Global climate change affects stream flow rate especially of small brooks and is probably related to more frequent extreme droughts, which affect populations of aquatic organisms. An example of strongly affected species is Gammarus fossarum, that inhabits majority of streams in the Czech Republic. In this work I compared populations from 5 pairs of permanent and intermittent sites with similar characteristics, to find out how does Gammarus cope with drought. Populations of gammarids on intermittent sites had lower after-drought abundance, predominance of males over females and fewer juveniles than permanent sites. Among every pair of sites (intermittent/permanent), there were significant differences between size structure of the populations. On permanent sites, smaller individuals were more abundant in comparison to intermittent sites, where bigger individuals dominated (mostly males). Even two months after reflooding, there were noticeable differences in size structure in the intermittent sites, which indicate that Gammarus fossarum has a potential for bioindication of previous drought.
