Katsura Villa - importance of traditional Japanese garden design for modern architecture

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této bakalářské diplomové práce bylo prozkoumání vztahu mezi tradiční japonskou zahradní architekturou a Západní moderní architekturou. Vila Kacura byla mimo Japonsko do počátku 20. století neznámá. Roku 1905 zřejmě vilu navštívil a inspiroval se jí Frank Lloyd Wright, ale svého boomu se Kacura dočkala až ve třicátých letech, kdy ji začal bezmezně obdivovat německý avantgardní architekt Bruno Taut. V padesátých letech se zahradní komplex stal objektem zkoumání moderních architektů Kenza Tangeho a Waltera Gropiuse. Tito a další moderní architekti našli v japonské estetice aplikované na vile Kacura jisté spojitosti se znaky moderní architektury, zejména s funkcionalismem a Bauhausem. Práce nabízí pohled do historie tradičních japonských zahrad a ukazuje, jaké architektonické styly předcházely konečnému slohu zahradního komplexu Kacura. Hlavní část práce se zabývá vývojem interpretace vily v průběhu 20. století u vybraných, pro Kacuru zásadních architektů. V závěru práce jsou uvedeny konkrétní stavby inspirované Kacurou jako důkaz vlivu estetiky této stavby nejen na moderní architekturu, ale také postmodernu.

Abstract:

The main aim of my bachelor work is to investigate the relationship between traditional architecture of Japanese gardem and modern Western architecture. In the early 20th Century the Katsura Villa was unknown outside of Japan. In 1905 Frank Lloyd Wright possibly visited the villa and got inspired but Katsura boom has come up in the thirties when German avant-garde architect Bruno Taut started admire the villa boundlessly. In the fifties garden complex has become an object of research for the modern architects Kenzo Tange and Walter Gropius. These and other modern architects found some continuity with the characters of modern architecture in the aestethic applied to Katsura Villa , especially with functionalism and Bauhaus. My work offers a view into the history of traditional Japanese gardens and explaines which architectural styles preceded the final garden style of Katsura complex. The main part deals with history of interpretation of the Villa during the 20th Century represented by selected architects crucial for Katsura. Finally the conclusion of my work shows some particular buildings inspired by Katsura as an evidence of influence Katsura has to the aestethic of the structure of modern architecture and postmodernism as well.
