Civil religion in the United States: Content analysis of presidential canidates speeches in 2008

Abstract:

Úkolem celé mé práce je zodpovědět otázku, zdali se v projevech kandidátů na post prezidenta i v roce 2008 objevují myšlenky spojované s americkým občanským náboženstvím. V první části proto nejprve představuji Bellahův koncept občanského náboženství v Americe. Zaměřuji se na představení kořenů konceptu, jeho uchopení Robertem N. Bellahem a nastiňuji i vývoj této myšlenky až do současnosti. Někteří autoři (Gedicks, 2010) zpochybňují aktuálnost Belahova konceptu a poukazují na to, že americká společnost se od roku vydání Bellahovy eseje se velmi změnila. Z těchto argumentů vzešel můj předpoklad, že tyto myšlenky již nejsou pro Američany aktuální ani atraktivní a proto se nebudou v projevech kandidátů objevovat. Mýlila jsem se. Po provedení obsahové analýzy třiceti dvou projevů od šesti kandidátů na post prezidenta mohu prohlásit, že v těchto projevech se myšlenky občanského náboženství objevují. Pro potřeby své analýzy jsem motivy občanského náboženství rozdělila do šesti kategorií – víru v existenci Boha; víru ve vyvolenost amerického národa; víru v Americký sen; víru v legitimizaci úřadu prezidenta Bohem; posvátnost symbolů, míst a svátků a důležitost víry a morálky. Všechny se v projevech prezidentů objevily - Barack Obama vedl v počtu zmínek o americké vyvolenosti, o víře v Americký sen, o důležitosti víry a morálky. John McCain měl nejvíce poznámek o existenci Boha. Cynthia McKinney vyzdvihovala posvátnost, Bob Barr zase nejvíce zmiňoval legitimizaci úřadu prezidenta Bohem.

Abstract:

The main aim of my Bechelor thesis was to answer the question if we can find the ideas of American civil religion in speeches of canidates for office of President of USA in election 2008. In my first part I´m going to introduce the grounds, then the Bellah´s concept of civil religion in America itself and also I am going to describe the development of this idea to present days. Some authors (Gedicks, 2010) have doubts about validity of the Bellah´s concept today and point out that American society changed since the essey about civil religion was published. From these arguments I supposed that these ideas are not for Americans atractive, so the candidates would not mention them. I was wrong, my content analysis of thirty two speeches of six candidates for office of President showed that these ideas were mentioned. I divided these ideas to six groups – the belief in existence of God, the belief that Americans are the nation chosen by God, the belief in American Dream, belief that autority of President is from God, belief that the national holidays, some symbols and places are sacred and belief in the importance of faith and morality. All these motives appeared in these speeches – Barack Obama mainly noticed the belief in American Dream, the belief that American are the nation chosen by God and belief in the importance of faith and morality. John McCain had the highest number of notes about the belief in existence of God. Cynthia McKinney mainly reminded the belief that the national holidays, some symbols and places are sacred and Bob Barr mentioned the belief that autority of President is from God.
