Study of the ion beam induced crystallization of the PZT thin film

Abstract:

Předkládaná disertační práce se zabývá studiem vlivu rozbíhavého iontového svazku na krystalickou strukturu nanášené tenké vrstvy zirkoničitanu-titaničitanu olovnatého (angl. Lead Zirconate titanate -- PZT). Iontový svazek je v našem případě produkován běžně komerčně používaným iontovým zdrojem Kaufmannova typu, určeným k čištění a modifikaci vlastností substrátu a rostoucí tenké vrstvy. V práci je postupně popsáno teoretické pozadí problematiky depozice a charakterizace tenkých vrstev PZT. Dále jsou shrnuty výsledky výzkumu prováděného s konvenčním keramickým naprašovacím terčem. Z těch vyplynula nevhodnost tohoto postupu pro účely experimentování s vlivem iontového svazku na rostoucí vrstvu. Ukázalo se, že je nutností mít možnost cíleně ovlivňovat složení vrstvy, což keramický terč neumožňuje. Následně je v práci navrženo originální řešení tohoto problému pomocí segmentového kovového terče. Proveditelnost tohoto řešení je nejprve analyzována simulacemi a následně demonstrována i praktickými experimenty. Na závěr práce se podařilo experimentálně prokázat, že iontový svazek, dopadající na rostoucí PZT vrstvu může zapříčinit snížení teploty nutné k její následné krystalizaci. V našem případě se tímto způsobem podařilo dosáhnout perovskitové struktury již při 500 °C.

Abstract:

This dissertation deals with the study of the effect of the divergent ion beam on the crystal structure of the PZT thin film. In our case, the ion beam is produced by a commercially available Kaufmann-type ion source designed for cleaning and modifying the properties of the substrate surface and the growing thin film. The thesis describes the theoretical background of deposition and characterization of the PZT thin films. Then, there are summarized the results of a research conducted with a conventional ceramic sputter target. It turned out that this approach is in our case inappropriate for studying the effect of the ion beam on the growing thin film. It was necessary to develop an approach, which allow us to precisely control the stechiometry of the deposited PZT thin film. An original solution of this problem is presented in this Thesis by proposing the sputtering from the segmented metal target. The feasibility of this approach has been at first analyzed by simulations and then demonstrated by sputtering experiments. Finally, it was experimentally demonstrated that using the dual ion beam sputtering deposition it is possible to deposit PZT thin films, whose crystallization to perovskite structure was achieved at 500 °C.
