Canonizing Literary Works: The Hunger Games as a Case Study

Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práce se soustředí na koncept kanonizace literatury v kontextu současné literatury. Analýza využívá příkladu trilogie Hry o život (The Hunger Games) od Suzanne Collinsové – populárního fenoménu současné kultury, který se pomalu dostává do akademického prostředí, a taktéž začíná poutat pozornost literárních kritiků – k tomu, aby poukázala na to, že tento konkrétní příklad současné literatury splňuje kritéria kanonizace, a proto je pravděpodobným adeptem na zařazení do kánonu americké literatury. Tato studie taktéž objasňuje, jak jsou kanonizační kritéria definována a jak proces kanonizace všeobecně funguje. Navíc mohou být tato kritéria vnímána jako všeobecní návod pro kanonizaci a pomáhají pochopit mechaniku formování literárního kánonu.

Abstract:

This Master’s thesis focuses on the concept of canonization of literary works in a context of contemporary literature. The analysis is carried out on an example of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins – a popular phenomenon in contemporary culture which appears to be slowly entering academic environment and starting to attract critical attention – in an attempt to point out that this specific example of contemporary literature follows the criteria of canonization and thus might be a likely aspirant for the position in future canon of American literature. This study also casts light on how the criteria for canonization are defined, and how the process of canonization works in general. Moreover, these criteria can be seen as a general guide for the canonization process, and they help to understand the mechanics of the formation of the literary canon.
