An Exploratory Study in the Use of Direct Quotation by L2 (Czech) Entry Level Bachelor Students

Anotace:

This study examines the use of direct quotation by entry level L2 (Czech) Bachelor students in essays on English literature. A corpus of 188 student essays was compiled and tagged using the recently developed DQMD tag (Docherty & Mach 2017) and then interrogated to explore the lexical and typographic form of the direct quotations, citations and surrounding co-text. The five areas studied were frequency, source, typographic accuracy, citation accuracy and method of textual integration including reporting verbs. A new term – shoehorning – is introduced to describe an idiosyncratic use of quotation found at this academic level of L2 student writing. Shoehorned quotations are typographically embedded but textually free-standing.
