The Perfect Aspect - The practical approach based on course books analysis in a cross-linguistic perspective

Abstract:

Anglické perfektum je obecně známo jako obtížná gramatická oblast pro většinu studentů anglického jazyka. Hlavním zdrojem obtíží však není jeho forma, ale význam. Je to dáno nejen složitostí celého konceptu složeného perfekta a jeho spojením s ostatními charakteristikami vět, ale především mateřským jazykem studentů, jehož pravidla pro užití perfekta mohou být v rozporu s jeho užitím v angličtině, stejně jako jeho význam může být buď širší či naopak užší. V neposlední řadě je obvyklé, že volba, zda užijeme tuto slovesnou formu či jinou, závisí na mluvčím a jeho vnímání popisované události. Díky těmto skutečnostem je velice náročné osvojit si užití anglického perfekta na vysoké úrovni blízké rodilým mluvčím. Zároveň je tato oblast obtížná i pro učitele, kteří ji vyučují, a pro tvůrce studijních materiálů, kteří se musí rozhodnout, jak k ní přistoupit. Ti musí zohlednit také specifika jazykového pozadí studentů, chtějí-li vyučovací proces co nejvíce usnadnit. S ohledem k výše zmíněnému tato práce pojednává dvě odlišná jazyková prostředí a to české (slovanské) a francouzské (románské) se zaměřením na pravděpodobné obtíže, na které mohou studenti těchto jazyků narazit, co se týče formy, významu a běžných slovních lexikálních doprovodů daného slovesného tvaru. Kupříkladu, v českém jazyce není složené perfektum plně vyvinuto, zatímco ve francouzštině ano, avšak v mírně odlišných významech. Tato práce dále porovnává dvě učebnice na středně pokročilé úrovni (tedy na úrovni, ve které se předpřítomný čas stává hlavním zaměřením) s cílem rozhodnout, která z nich se zabývá těmito problémy, následně pak zda a jak pomáhá studentům osvojit si tuto strukturu.

Abstract:

The perfect aspect is a notoriously difficult language area for most learners of English to master. The main issue is not in terms of its form, but in terms of its meaning. This is caused by the complexity of the concept and its connection to other features of sentences and above all by learners’ L1, where usage rules may interfere with the English perfect as well as be either wider or narrower in meaning. Moreover, it is usually a matter of a person’s choice whether they use either this verb form or a different one according to their perception of an event. Therefore the acquisition of a near-native usage of the perfect is very demanding. Concomitantly, it is a difficult area for teachers to teach and material planners to approach. They have to bear in mind the linguistic background of learners and its specifics in order to ease the learning process as much as possible. With this in mind the present dissertation looks at two different linguistic backgrounds, Czech (Slavic) and French (Roman), and at potential difficulties that these respective learners may encounter in terms of the perfect aspect’s form, meaning and lexical accompaniments. For example, Czech does not have the perfect aspect fully developed while French does, however with slightly different meaning. The dissertation then compares two course books at intermediate level (the level at which the present perfect becomes a major focus) with a view to deciding which one addresses these difficulties and whether and how it helps learners to acquire the structure.
