Cybersecurity game at KYPO4INDUSTRY testbed

Abstract:

V poslední době čelí řídící systémy odpovědné za správu technologických procesů zvyšujícímu se počtu počítačových útoků. Zabezpečení řídících systémů vyžaduje rozsáhlé mezioborové znalosti z informačních technologií (IT) a provozních technologií (OT). Avšak kvůli znalostním a komunikačním mezerám mezi průmyslovými experty a IT specialisty se průmyslové řídící systémy (ICS) mohou stát zranitelnými a mohou být zneužity útočníky. K překonání tohoto problému je zapotřebí specializovaného vzdělávání v oblasti bezpečnosti ICS. Tato práce přináší rešerši dostupných vzdělávacích materiálů a představuje vzdělávací kyberbezpečnostní hru zaměřenou na bezpečnost ICS. Hra byla testována skutečnými hráči, kteří ji hodnotili kladně. Jde také o jednu z prvních her vyvinutou pro vylepšený KYPO4INDUSTRY (K4I) testbed, která bude sloužit pro tvorbu dalších her na tomto testbedu. Dále také popisujeme zmíněná vylepšení současného K4I testbedu, která řeší dřívější nedostatky. Teoretické i praktické výsledky této práce přispívají k dalšímu výzkumu a vzdělávání v oblasti ICS bezpečnosti.

Abstract:

Recently, the control systems responsible for the management of industrial processes have been facing an increased number of attacks. Securing control systems require extensive interdisciplinary knowledge from both information technology (IT) and operation technology (OT). However, due to the knowledge and communication gap between engineers and IT specialists, Industrial Control Systems (ICS) can become vulnerable and be exploited by an attacker. To address the gap, specialised education in ICS cybersecurity is needed. This thesis maps current educational ICS materials and proposes an educational cybersecurity game focused on the ICS. The game was played by real players and received positive feedback. It is one of the first ICS cybersecurity games developed on the enhanced KYPO4INDUSTRY testbed, which will serve as an example for future game development. We also describe mentioned enhancements of the state-of-the-art (K4I) ICS testbed we have made to overcome its limitations. Both theoretical and practical results of this thesis contribute to the education and research of the ICS cybersecurity.
