Cluster Theory in Philosophy of Art

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá soudobým pokusem o definici pojmu „umění“. Představuje klastrovou teorii Beryse Gauta, jež se vyznačuje ne-esencialistickým přístupem. Nejprve jsou stručně představeny předcházející pokusy o definici umění, následně vlivné myšlenky Ludwiga Wittgensteina a Morrise Weitze, z nichž klastrová teorie vychází. Z těchto bodů se práce přesouvá k vlastnímu popisu teorie Beryse Gauta a poté k její kritice. Cílem práce je podrobně představit klastrovou teorii, její potenciál a přínos pro filozofii umění.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the contemporary attempt to define the term “art”. It introduces the cluster concept by Berys Gaut, which is characterized by anti-essentialist approach. Previous attempts to define art are briefly introduced in the first part of the thesis, followed by influential ideas of Ludwig Wittgenstein, and Morris Weitz, from whom the cluster concept derives. After these points, thesis continues with its own interpretation of Berys Gaut theory, followed by its criticism. The main goal of this work is to introduce the cluster concept in detail, and to emphasize its potential, as well as its contribution to the philosophy of art.
