Women in interfaith marriages and shifts in their religious identity

Abstract:

Tato práce se zaměřuje na nábožensky smíšené manželství, konkrétně křesťansko-muslimské sňatky. Pomocí biograficko-narativního paradigmatu (Hamar 2008) a interview se zaměřuje na křesťanky, v těchto nábožensky smíšených sňatcích. Stěžejním výzkumem, ze kterého tato diplomová práce čerpá, jak v teoretické části, tak v analýze dat, je výzkum Hamar (2008). Diplomová práce se zabývá dvěmi klíčovými tématy, a to proměnou náboženské identity těchto křesťanek a strategiemi vyjednávání náboženství v rámci jedné domácnosti. Práce staví na předpokladu, že skrze každodenní vyjednávání náboženství a jeho místa v rodině, výchově, tradicích a rituálech dochází k výraznější proměně náboženských identit respondentek. Tento předpoklad se v práci potvrdil pouze u jedné respodentky, ale proměna náboženské identity byla pomocí analýzy identifikována i u ostatních respondentek. Náboženská identita respondentek byla analyzována skrze koncept brikoláže. Co se týče druhého tématu, strategie vyjednávání náboženství byly v rozhovorech spojovány převážně s vyjednáváním náboženské výchovy dětí respondentek. Výchova hrála klíčovou roli ve volbě i změně strategií vyjednávání náboženství. V souvislosti s výchovou jsou v práci analyzovány i rodičovské etnoteorie (Harkness, Super a kolegové, 2010). Při analýze těchto strategií vycházím v práci zejména z výzkumu Cerchiara, Auperse a Houtmana (2015). Práce navíc staví na výzkumu Kurttekin (2020) a její analýzy náboženské výchovy dětí, která identifikuje klíčové momenty ve výchově dětí nábožensky smíšených rodičů. Tato práce předpokládá, že vlivem negativního vnímání islámu v české společnosti budou respondentky nuceni vyjednávat jejich vztah s okolím a využívat k tomu různé strategie. Zároveň práce předpokládá, že tento negativní postoj české společnosti, ale také jejich přátel i rodin, k islámu se může projevit v těchto manželstvích.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on interfaith marriages, specifically Christian-Muslim marriages. Using a biographical-narrative paradigm (Hamar 2008) and an interview, it focuses on Christian women in these interfaith marriages. The core research from which this thesis draws, both in theory and in data analysis, is Hamar (2008). This thesis focuses on two key themes, the transformation of the religious identity of these Christian women and strategies for negotiating religion within the same household. The work builds on the premise that through daily negotiations of religion and its place in the family, upbringing, traditions and rituals, the religious identities of female respondents will change. This assumption was confirmed only in case one respondent, but the transformation of religious identity was also identified in other respondents through analysis but the change in their identity happened before they got into relationship with their Muslim husbands. The religious identity of the respondents was analysed through the concept of bricolage. The second theme, the strategies for negotiating religion were largely associated in the interviews with negotiating the religious education of the children of the respondents. Education played a key role in choosing and changing strategies for negotiating religions in these interfaith marriages. Parental ethnotheories are also analysed in this work mainly in connection with education of these children (Harkness, Super and colleagues, 2010). The analyses of these strategies is based on research of Cerchiaro, Aupers and Houtman (2015). In addition, the work builds on Kurttekin´s (2020) research and her analysis of children's religious education, in which she identified the key moments in the upbringing of children raised in interfaith marriages. This work assumes that due to the negative perception of Islam in Czech society, respondents will be forced to negotiate their relationship with their surroundings and use different strategies to do so. At the same time, work assumes that this negative attitude of Czech society towards Islam, and also the negative attitude of their friends and families towards their relationship, can manifest itself in these interfaith marriages.
