Il Pomo d'oro. A festa teatrale for the wedding of the Emperor Leopold I and Margarita Maria Teresa of Spain

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce přináší krátkou analýzu opery Il Pomo d´oro (Zlaté jablko), která byla provedena roku 1668 u císařského dvora ve Vídni. Příležitostí k provedení se stala svatba císaře Leopolda I. s jeho první manželkou Markétou Marií Terezou Španělskou. Svatba a s ní spojené slavnosti měly své politické pozadí, jímž bylo rostoucí napětí mezi rakouskými Habsburky a francouzskými Bourbony. Jedni i druzí měli zájem o ohromné dědictví vymírající španělské věve habsburského domu. Ludvík XIV. se roku 1660 oženil se španělskou infantkou Marií Terezou a Leopold I. o šest let později s její mladší sestrou Markétou Marií Terezou. Ve všech svatebních slavnostech včetně prologu opery Il Pomo d´oro zaznívá otevřeně nárok rakouských Habsburků na dědictví po španělských příbuzných. Děj pětiaktové opery vychází z Homérovy báje o sporu tří bohyň o zlaté jablko. Jejich spor rozsoudil trójský princ Paris ve prospěch bohyně Venuše. Libretista Francesco Sbarra použil tento příběh k vylíčení chaosu, který nastal po Paridově soudu, když dvě bohyně, které neuspěly, se chtěly pomstít a zahubit Parida. Válku tří bohyní zastavuje teprve Jupiter a přisuzuje zlaté jablko nové císařovně Markétě. Hudbu k tomuto dílu benátského stylu zkomponoval Antonio Cesti, který použil především recitativy, ariosa a strofické árie s doprovodem nástrojů bassa continua a s vloženými instrumentálními ritornely. V opeře vystupují též sbory, zvláště v prologu a v některých scénách. Provedení díla v roke 1668 bylo slavné a velkolepé: byly zde tři baletní výstupy, 23 scénických proměn a různé jevištní efekty (létající bohové, mořská bouře, zemětřesení atd.).

Abstract:

The bachelor-work brings a brief analysis of the opera Il Pomo d´oro (The golden apple), which was performed in 1668 at the imperial court in Vienna. The occasion was the wedding of the Emperor Leopold I and his first wife Margarita Maria Teresa of Spain. The wedding and all festivities had their political background, which was a growing friction between the Austrian Habsburgs and french King Louis XIV, they both had been interested in the great heritage of the spanish branch of the House of Habsburg, which was dying out. Louis XIV married in 1660 the spanish Infantin Maria Teresa and Leopold I married her younger sister Margarita Maria Teresa six years later. In all the festivites of the Austrian wedding in 1666–1668 and also in the opera Il Pomo d´oro, especially in the prologue, were clearly expressed the pretensions of the Austrian branch of the House of Habsburg. The five-act opera plot was inspired by the mythological story of Homer about the quarrel of three goddesses about the golden apple. The quarell was judged by the princ Paris of Troja, who favorized the goddess Venus. The librettist Francesco Sbarra used this plot to show the chaos, which rised after the judgement, when the other two goddesses, Juno and Pallade, wanted to avenge themselves and destroy Paris. The war of three goddesses suspends Jupiter and gives the golden apple to the new Empress Margarita. The music to this work composed in venetian style Antonio Cesti, who applied recitatives, ariosi and lyric strophical arias with the basso continuo-accompagnement and with instrumental ritornellos. Especially in the prologue and in several scenes are presented also choirs. The performance of the music dramatical work in 1668 was very luxurious: there were three ballet-performaces, 23 changes of the scene and several scenic effects (a deus ex machina, a storm on the sea, an earthquake etc.).
