Luby - Markneukirchen Region, its History and Importance for the Development of Double Bass Making

Abstract:

Disertační práce nese název Region Luby - Markneukirchen, jeho historie a význam pro vývoj kontrabasového houslařství. Zabývá se historickým vývojem regionu od počátku 12. století po současnost a zároveň vznikem houslařství. Vysvětluje souvislosti vzniku tohoto řemesla v dané lokalitě od jeho prokazatelných počátků v polovině 17. století a podrobně mapuje jeho vývoj po současnost. Dále se zaměřuje na houslařské rody, které stály u zrodu houslařství v regionu a vysvětluje příčiny pozdějšího přechodu z domácí na manufakturní a později tovární výrobu. Pojednává rovněž o spřízněných oborech houslařství, jako např. zpracovávání dřeva a popisuje technický vývoj ve výrobě koncem 19. a ve 20. století. Celá práce je doprovázena sérií vzácných fotografií. Mimo jiné se snaží zodpovědět otázku týkající se vzniku kontrabasového houslařství a poukázat na jeho vývoj v regionu. Podstatná část je zaměřena na podnik na výrobu hudebních nástrojů Cremona (později Strunal s.r.o.) a jeho důležitou úlohu při výrobě kontrabasů. Rovněž zmiňuje zakladatele systematické výroby kontrabasů ve 20. století a to hlavně mistry Josefa Budila, Miroslava Pikarta, Rudolfa Oberländera, a jiné. Poslední kapitola je věnována porovnání dvou kontrabasů a to jak z hlediska stavby, tak z hlediska zvuku.

Abstract:

The dissertation is entitled “Luby – Markneukirchen Region, its History and Importance for the Development of Double Bass Making”. It deals with the historical development of the region from the beginning of the 12th century to the present and also with the emergence of violin making. It explains the context of the origin of this craft in the region from its demonstrable beginnings in the mid-17th century and maps its development in detail to the present. Furthermore, it focuses on violin-making families, who were at the birth of violin-making in the region and explains the reasons for the later transition from small workshops to manufacture and later factory production. It also deals with related branches of violin making, such as woodworking and describes the technical development of production at the end of the 19th and 20th centuries. The thesis contains numerous period photographs. Among other things, it attempts to answer the question about the emergence of double bass making and to show its development in the region. A substantial section focuses on the Cremona musical instrument manufacturing company (later Strunal s.r.o.) and its major role in the production of double basses. It also mentions the founders of systematic production of double basses in the 20th century, mainly Josef Budil, Miroslav Pikart, Rudolf Oberländer and other master craftsmen. The last chapter compares two double basses, both in terms of construction and sound.
