Facilitating Academic Achievements in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Learners in Inclusive Education Programmes Using Bilingual Educational Methodologies: A Case Study of Inclusive Special Schools in Akwa Ibom State – Nigeria

Abstract:

Předkládaná dizertační práce se zabývá problematikou výkonu skupiny respondentů, která sestávala ze šesti slyšících studentů Masarykovy univerzity, 64 Neslyšících žáků inkluzivních škol (7. až 9. ročník) a 14 Neslyšících učitelů v Nigérii. Výzkumné šetření trvalo celkem čtyři měsíce a byla v něm použitá strategie smíšeného výzkumu. Účelem studie bylo najít odpovědi na výzkumné otázky, jež formovaly jádro výzkumných aktivit. V prvním výzkumu byla skupina slyšících studentů po dobu tří měsíců vystavená americkému znakovému jazyku (ASL), a jejich znalost tohoto jazyka byla následně evaluována za použití „Sign Language Assessment Inventory“ (SLAI), nástroje vyvinutého pro účely této studie. Účelem tohoto hodnocení bylo stanovení maximální dosažené úrovně znalosti znakového jazyka účastníků a předpověď jejich potenciálního úspěchu ve výuce ve znakovém jazyce v akademickém prostředí. Další část výzkumu se soustředila na skupinu Neslyšících žáků 7. až 9. ročníku základní školy (1. – 3. ročník nižší střední školy) a jejich učitele, kteří byli pozorovaní po dobu jednoho měsíce. Jejich výuka probíhala za použití bilingvální metody a dosažené výsledky žáků byly rovněž evaluovány. Dizertační práce sestává ze tří hlavních částí. První část vysvětluje autorův zájem o danou problematiku. Následující teoretická část představila průřez relevantní literaturou a výzkumná část prezentuje výsledky výzkumu ve formě tabulek, grafů, diagramů a obrázků.

Abstract:

This presented dissertation assessed the performance outcome of a group of samples which consisted of 6 hearing students in Masaryk University, 64 Deaf learners in basic education programmes in inclusive Junior Secondary 1 – 3, and 14 Deaf education teachers in Nigeria. The study was a mix of quantitative and qualitative research, and the design type used was the three group mixed research design. The study was conducted over a period of four months. The study sought to find answers to the research questions which form the nucleus of the research activities. In the first survey, a group of hearing students were exposed to the concept of American Sign Language (ASL) for a period of three months, and their skill level was evaluated using the sign language assessment inventory (SLAI) toolkit developed for this study. The purpose of the assessment was to establish the sign language threshold level of the participants and use it to predict potential success in academic sign language delivery for Deaf consumption. In a second evaluation, a group of Deaf samples in junior secondary schools and teachers were observed for one month and given intervention in bilingual educational methodologies and their responses was evaluated. The study has three components, a background which explained why the researcher was interested in the topic. The theoretical part of the study reviewed related literatures which conform to the subject matter under investigation. The empirical part of the study presented results from the surveys in form of tables, graphs, diagrams and pictures.
