Obstacles to humanitarian and development aid in Haiti

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této bakalářské práce, je seznámit čtenáře s tématem problémů při humanitární a rozvojové pomoci na Haiti. Tyto překážky jsou přímo závislé a vycházejí z rozvojových problémů země. Práce byla vypracována na základě rešeršně-kompilační metody, která je složena ze současných a historických faktů a znalostí. Tato metoda byla dále podpořena a podložena rozhovory s přímými pracovníky neziskových organizací. Úvodní teoretický úsek se zaměřuje na obecné objasnění termínů humanitární a rozvojové spolupráce. Čtenářům je zde také vysvětlen kontext rozvoje regionu Latinské Ameriky a Karibiku v němž se Haiti nachází. Praktická část se dále soustředí na daný popis rozvojových sfér země. V práci jsou přímo charakterizovány obtíže, se kterými se humanitární a rozvojová pomoc na Haiti setkává. Bylo zjištěno, že konkrétní překážky se z obecného hlediska dělí na 4 typy. Zatímco fyzicko-geografickým problémům v podobě přírodních katastrof předejít nelze, demografická oblast a oblast sociálních a ekonomických překážek je následkem nestabilní historie řízení státu. Posledním zdrojem překážek při pomoci je humanitární a rozvojová pomoc samotná.

Abstract:

The objective of this bachelor’s thesis is to acquaint readers with the topic of obstacles of development and humanitarian aid in Haiti. These obstacles are directly dependent on the country’s development problems. The thesis was developed on the basis of search-compilation method which is composed of current and historical facts and knowledge. This method was further supported and based on the interviews with direct employees of non-profit organizations. The introductory theoretical section focuses on a general clarification of the terms humanitarian and development cooperation. Readers are also explained the context of the development of the Latin America and Caribbean region in which Haiti is located and with which it shares its analogies. The practical part further focuses on the given description of the country’s development spheres. Thesis directly characterizes the difficulties encountered by humanitarian and development aid in Haiti. It was found that specific obstacles are generally divided into 4 types. While geographical problems in the form of natural disasters cannot be prevented, the demographic sphere and the sphere of social and economic obstacles are the result of an unstable history of state administration. The last source of obstacles to aid is foreign aid and non-profit organizations and their members themselves.
