Emperor Nero from the point of view ancient authors and his picture in modern historiography

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce představuje císaře Nerona pomocí pohledu starověkých antických autorů a jeho obrazu v moderní historiografii na základě analýzy vybraných děl. Zabývá se tím, jaké motivy vedly antické autory k negativnímu či pozitivnímu pohledu na daného císaře. U moderní historiografie se soustředí především na to, jak se její pohled na Nerona změnil, jakou metodologii k rekonstrukci jeho obrazu používá, zaměřuje se na interdisciplinární spolupráci a také na různé typy pramenů, se kterými pracuje.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis presents Emperor Nero from the perspective of authors in ancient times, as well as his image in modern historiography, based on the analysis of selected works. It deals with the motives that led the ancient authors to perceive a negative or positive view of the Emperor. With modern historiography, the analyses focus primaly on how the view of Nero has changed and what methodology was used to reconstructhis picture. This modern perspective has taken an interdisciplinary approach and a range of different types of sources of information, at its foundation.
