Subjective meaning of modal verbs

Abstract:

My bachelor thesis deals with the subjective meaning of modal verbs. I described the objective and subjective modality in the theoretical part and I chose some examples with Czech translation to each modal verb for a better survey. I described the meanings of modal verbs this way: one is to do with degrees of certainty: modal verbs can be used to say e. g. that a situation is certain, probable, possible or impossible. The other is to do with obligation, freedom to act and similar ideas: modal verbs can be used to say that somebody is obliged to do something, that he/she is able to do something, that there is nothing to stop something happening, that it would be better if something happened /or did not/, or that something is permitted or forbidden. I described various aspects of modal verbs in subjective meaning - present, preterit, infinite perfect - active and passive and conjunctive II. In practical part I worked only with the subjective meaning of modal verbs and with some examples that I found in various work of fiction, German magazines and newspaper. I translated each example into Czech. Finally I worked out some graphs and a chart with occurence of particular modal verbs with subjective meaning.

Abstract:

Jako téma mé bakalářské práce jsem si vybrala subjektivní způsob výpověďi modálních sloves. V teoretické části jsem popisovala objektivní a subjektivní modalitu. Pro lepší přehled objektivní a subjektivní modality jsem udala několik příkladů s českým překladem ke každému modálnímu slovesu. V případě objektivní modality jsem zkusila objasnit různé významy modálních sloves - např. vůle/úmysl, dovolení (popřené)/zákaz, nutnost/požadavek nebo možnost, v případě subjektivní modality jsem uvedla dva typy výpovědi - domněnka a /cizí/ tvrzení. Popisovala jsem zde také různé aspekty užití modálních sloves v subjektivní výpovědi - präsens, präteritum, minulý infinitiv Perfekt - aktivní a pasívní a konjunktiv II. V praktické části jsem se věnovala jenom subjektivní výpovědi modálních sloves a příkladům, které jsem vyhledala v různých beletristických dílech a německých časopisech a novinách. Každý vyhledaný příklad jsem přeložila do češtiny. Nakonec jsem vypracovala o výskytu jednotlivých modálních sloves se subjektivní výpovědí tabulku a grafy.
