A Comparison of Narrative Organization, Style and Thematics in James' Joyce's 'Dubliners' and Pat Barker's 'Union Street'

Anotácia:

Záměrem mé bakalářské práce je porovnat knihu Dubliňané Jamese Joycea a Union Street Pat Barkerovej z hlediska narativní organizace, stylu a tematiky. Mým cílem je poukázat na paralely mezi těmito dvěma prácemi, jako i na rozdíly mezi nimi a poskytnout pro tyto rozdíly vysvětlení vycházející z literární analýzy a výzkumu kulturně-společenského pozadí obou autorů. V první části se věnuji analýze literárních aspektů jednotlivých prací, od narativní organizace a metod narace, stylu a jazykových prostředků, po hlavní tematické okruhy rozebírané v těchto dvou sbírkách povídek. Má analýza se opírá jak o příklady z primární literatury, tak o sekundární zdroje. V třetí sekci mé práce se zaměřuji na porovnávání těchto dvou děl a hledání rozdílů mezi nimi na základě mých předchozích detailních analýz a sumarizuji hlavní styčné body těchto prací. Nakonec, v závěru práce, poskytuji vysvětlení pro jednotlivá zjištění s ohledem na socioekonomické, politické a literární pozadí obou autorů.

Abstract:

The purpose of my Bachelor's Thesis is to compare and contrast James Joyce's Dubliners and Pat Barker's Union Street from the point of view of narrative organiza-tion, style and thematics. My aim is to point out analogies as well as the differences between the two works and to provide an explanation of their occurrence. First, I examine the two works individually, analysing the narrative organization and methods of narration, style and the language used and main thematic concerns of the two collections respectively. This analysis is based on examples from the primary texts as well as theories from secondary sources. In the third section of my Bachelor's Thesis I compare and contrast the outcomes of my previous analyses and summarize the main common features of the two works. Finally, in the conclusion, I explain the reasons of my findings with regard to the authors' socio-economic, political and literary background.
