Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá použitím vymyšlených mimozemských jazyků v současné literatuře žánru science-fiction. Cílem práce je poskytnout zevrubný popis funkcí, které v literatuře věnující se prvnímu kontaktu s mimozemskými kulturami hrají uměle vytvořené mimozemské jazyky. V diplomové práci zkoumám pět románů: „Native Tongue“ (1984) od Suzette Haden Elgin, „Foreigner“ (1994) od C. J. Cherryh, „The Color of Distance“ (1995) od Amy Thomson, „The Sparrow“ (1996) od Mary Doria Russell, „Embassytown“ (2011) od Chiny Miévilla a povídku „Story of Your Life“ (1998) od Teda Chianga. Na rozdíl od tradičních analýz vytvořených jazyků v literatuře, které se zpravidla zabývají pouze zhodnocením možností jejich využití ve skutečné komunikaci, je tato diplomová práce zkoumá v literárním kontextu. Vymyšlené mimozemské jazyky hrají ve sci-fi literatuře několik úloh. Samozřejmě slouží jako komunikační prostředek mimozemských bytostí. Jsou také jedním z nástrojů, které v textu pomáhají zdůraznit rozdíly mezi jejich fiktivními mluvčími a lidskými čtenáři pomocí vytváření mimozemské identity. Dále zastávají emblematickou funkci, autoři do nich tedy vkládají lingvistickou i sociální symboliku. V neposlední řadě slouží tyto jazyky jako slohové prostředky, které posouvají děj vpřed tak, aby dílo vyznělo dle autorova úmyslu. Ve sci-fi literatuře pojednávající o setkání s mimozemskými civilizacemi autoři využívají uměle vytvořené mimozemské jazyky poměrně často, což poskytuje bohaté množství materiálu k bádání. Analýzou vybraných děl vytváří má diplomová práce rámec funkcí, které tyto jazyky v současné sci-fi literatuře zastávají. Rozsah práce ani povaha tématu však nedovoluje jejich kompletní výčet a téma tak zůstává otevřené dalšímu bádání.

Abstract:

This thesis analyses the use of created alien languages in recent science fiction. The aim of the study is to provide a comprehensive description of the functions of created extraterrestrial languages in recent alien encounter stories. The thesis analyses six works: Suzette Haden Elgin’s Native Tongue (1984), C. J. Cherryh’s Foreigner (1994), Amy Thomson’s The Color of Distance (1995), Mary Doria Russell’s The Sparrow (1996), Ted Chiang’s novella Story of Your Life (1998) and China Miéville’s Embassytown (2011). In contrast with traditional analyses of created languages in literature, which mostly inquire into the usability of the languages in real life communication, this thesis deals with them in the context of storytelling. In science fiction created alien languages serve several roles. They naturally provide the medium of communication of the alien beings. They are one of the tools which create the gap between aliens and humans through the way these languages give the aliens a sense of identity. They also serve an emblematic function, which means that linguistic as well as social symbolism is embedded in them. And lastly, the created languages serve the role of literary devices by moving the plot forward in a direction envisioned by the writer. As alien encounter science fiction often makes use of created languages, the topic offers a rich material for inquiry. Through the analysis of the selected works the thesis provides a general framework of functions of created alien languages in contemporary science fiction. However, the thesis could not possibly provide the full picture and the topic is open for more research.
