Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou správné anglické výslovnosti se zaměřením na navrhované zanedbávané aspekty výslovnosti angličtiny u slovenských mluvčích. Předpokládá se, že některé aspekty jsou obvykle přehlíženy, ať už úmyslně nebo nevědomky. Jednou z ústředních otázek práce je, zda a do jaké míry lze zlepšit výslovnost slovenských mluvčích, klademe-li důraz na zmíněné zanedbávané aspekty. První tři kapitoly se soustředí na obecný popis anglického jazyka v pozici hlavního mezinárodního dorozumívacího prostředku a na aktuální téma výběru vhodného modelu výslovnosti. Je konstatováno, že studenti by se měli zaměřit na osvojení si co nejpřirozenější výslovnosti vzhledem k její mezinárodní srozumitelnosti. Další kapitola se zabývá anglickým a slovenským jazykem a je vykonána důkladná komparativní analýza výslovnosti obou jazyků s důrazem na rozdíly mezi těmito dvěma jazyky. Jsou určeny čtyři často zanedbávané aspekty – stres a redukce, aspirace, znělost a neznělost, a spojování slov. Aby se potvrdilo předpokládané zanedbávání těchto aspektů, byl proveden výzkum o třech částech. V první části je popsáno, jaké je povědomí navrhovaných zanedbávaných aspektů. Mezi slovenskými studenty gymnázií je proveden průzkum, který potvrzuje, že navrhované zanedbávané aspekty jsou skutečně přehlíženy a podceňovány. V druhé části výzkumu je vytvořena krátká příručka užitečných tipů pro výslovnost angličtiny určená zejména slovenským studentům. Šest z nich je pomocí příručky vyškoleno a před a po školení jsou zhotoveny nahrávky jejich výslovnosti. Subjektivně bylo pozorováno, že výslovnost těchto šesti slovenských studentů se zlepšila. Aby se potvrdil vliv školení, je zhotoven krátký dotazník s výslovností u těchto 6 slovenských studentů před a po školení. Výsledky dotazníku potvrzují zjištění autora a dospělo se tedy k závěru, že navrhované a slovenskými studenty často zanedbávané aspekty anglické výslovnosti skutečně existují. Doporučuje se klást větší důraz na jejich osvojení například s pomocí vytvořené příručky.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the issues of correct English pronunciation, with focus on proposed neglected aspects of English pronunciation among Slovak speakers. It is hypothesized that certain aspects are usually overlooked, either intentionally, or unwittingly. One of the central questions of the thesis is whether the pronunciation of Slovak speakers can be improved, and to what extent, by focusing on the neglected aspects. The first three chapters are focused on the general background of English language as an international means of communication, and on the topical issue of selection of appropriate pronunciation model. It is concluded that learners ought to aim for the most native-like sounding accent, due to its international intelligibility. The next chapter examines both English and Slovak languages and a thorough comparative analysis of the pronunciation of both languages is carried out, with focus on the differences between the two languages. Four aspects are chosen to be often neglected—stress and reduction, aspiration, voicing and devoicing, and linking. To confirm the hypothesized neglect of these aspects, a threefold research has been carried out. First part is focused on awareness of the proposed neglected aspects of English pronunciation. A survey is carried out among Slovak grammar-school students, which confirms that the proposed neglected aspects are indeed overlooked and undervalued. The second part of the research is focused on a compilation of a short handbook of useful tips on English pronunciation, which is aimed specifically for Slovak students. Six of them are trained by means of the handbook, and they are recorded before and after the training. It is subjectively observed that the pronunciation skills of these six Slovak learners improved. In order to confirm the impact of the training, a short online questionnaire focused on the pronunciation of the 6 Slovak speakers before and after the training is composed. The results of the questionnaire confirm the author’s findings and it is thus concluded that the proposed neglected aspects of English pronunciation among Slovak learners are present and it is advisable to pay attention to them using means such as the proposed handbook.
