Development of ternary and quaternary nanostructured coatings and their preparation by magnetron sputtering

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá výzkumem X-B-C materiálů s X = Mo, Nb, Ta, W ve formě tenkých vrstev. Podrobně popisuje motivaci pro studium těchto materiálů, jejich nanášení magnetronovým naprašováním a jejich analýzu různými vědeckými metodami. Jsou diskutovány účinky zvoleného prvku X, vliv chemického složení a parametrů depozice na vlastnosti studovaných povlaků. Vlastnosti povlaků jako krystalická struktura, tvrdost, lomová odolnost, koeficient tření, odolnost proti opotřebení a tepelná stabilita jsou měřeny a diskutovány s ohledem na možné průmyslové aplikace. Zatímco krystalická ortorombická fáze Mo2BC je známá po desetiletí jako objemový materiál, potenciál X2BC jako ochranných povlaků pro kovoobráběcí aplikace je relativně novým směrem výzkumu. Ab-initio výpočty předpověděly pro krystalické X2BC fáze vynikající kombinaci vysoké tvrdosti a střední tažnosti, přičemž se očekává vyšší odolnost proti lomu ve srovnání se současnými nejmodernějšími povlaky při zachování podobné úrovně vysoké tvrdosti. Výsledky prezentované v této práci ukazují úspěšnou syntézu krystalické Mo2BC fáze v povlaku vykazujícím vynikající odolnost proti lomu v kombinaci s vysokou tvrdostí. Studie týkající se dalších prvků X (X = Nb, Ta, W) neprokázaly vznik jiné krystalické X2BC fáze. Náročnost syntézy těchto fází je doložena nedostatkem přesvědčivých zpráv o syntéze krystalických Nb2BC, Ta2BC nebo W2BC fází v dostupné literatuře. Tato práce však ukazuje, že systém X-B-C vykazuje vysokou tvrdost a odolnost proti lomu i v amorfním stavu, pokud je zvoleno správné chemické složení a podmínky depozice. Práce končí diskuzí o možných budoucích směrech výzkumu s cílem syntetizovat krystalické X2BC fáze. Diskuse je založena na porovnání vypočtených formačních energií X2BC fází s energiemi odpovídajících binárních fází a vyhodnocení pravděpodobnosti úspěšné syntézy X2BC pro různé prvky X. Předkládaná disertační práce sestává z kompilace autorčiných publikovaných recenzovaných prací na toto téma doplněných o komentáře a další experimentální výsledky.

Abstract:

This thesis explores the X-B-C materials (X = Mo, Nb, Ta, W) in the form of thin coatings. It details the motivation for the study of these materials, their deposition by magnetron sputtering and their analysis by a variety of scientific methods. The effects of the chosen X element are discussed, as well as the influence of chemical composition and deposition parameters on the properties of the studied coatings. Properties such as crystalline structure, hardness, fracture resistance, coefficient of friction, wear resistance and thermal stability are evaluated and discussed with regard to possible industrial applications. While the nanolaminated orthorhombic Mo2BC phase has been known for decades as a bulk material, the potential of X2BC as protective coatings for metal cutting applications is a relatively new line of research. Ab-initio calculations have predicted an excellent combination of high hardness and moderate ductility for crystalline X2BC phases, expecting a higher fracture resistance compared to the current state-of-the-art coatings while maintaining a similar level of high hardness. The results presented in this work showcase the successful synthesis of a crystalline Mo2BC phase in the form of a deposited coating exhibiting an excellent fracture resistance combined with high hardness. Studies concerning the other X elements (X = Nb, Ta, W) have shown no evidence of the X2BC phase. The challenge of synthesizing these phases is evidenced by no conclusive reports of crystalline Nb2BC, Ta2BC or W2BC synthesis in the available literature. However, this work shows that the X-B-C system exhibits a high hardness and fracture resistance even in an amorphous state if the correct chemical composition and deposition conditions are chosen. The work concludes with a discussion of possible future lines of research with the goal of synthesizing crystalline X2BC phases. The discussion is based on comparing calculated energies of formation of the X2BC phase with corresponding binary phases and evaluating the likelihood of successful X2BC synthesis for different X elements. The presented dissertation thesis consists of a compilation of the author's published peer-reviewed papers on this topic, supplemented by the author's comments and additional experimental results.
