Cooking TV show from the viewpoint of a theory of taste by Pierre Bourdieu: rating and content analysis

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá tématem reprezentace gastronomie v českých kulinárních pořadech vysílaných v před prime timeovém vysílacím schématu, a to skrze teorii vkusu Pierra Bourdieu. Studie prostřednictvím zvolených metod – ratingové a kvantitativní obsahové analýzy – zachytí jednak diváckou strukturu těchto pořadů, a také jaké varianty vkusu tyto pořady produkují. Práce sleduje celkem dva výzkumné cíle. První z nich pomocí analýzy publika (ratingové analýzy) ukáže, jak silnou pozici mají kulinární pořady v českém televizním kontextu, a rovněž jaké jsou základní sociodemografické charakteristicky konzumentů těchto pořadů. Všímat si bude hlavně charakteristik věku, pohlaví a vzdělání. Data pro tuto analýzu budou čerpána přes analytický software Golem. Druhý cíl práce zachytí, zdali dochází v gastronomických pořadech k etablování třídních distinkcí nebo jestli tyto pořady stírají třídní rozdíly. Ukáže tak, jestli dochází spíše k homogenizaci nebo heterogenizace publika na úrovni vkusů. Tento krok bude realizován pomocí analýzy obsahu tři kuchařských show (Prostřeno, Kluci v akci a Karolína, domácí kuchařka) a budou využity celkem tři pozice podle vkusu, a to status (nízký a vysoký vkus), gender (femininní a maskulinní vkus) a národ (lokální a globální vkus). Teoretická část práce se zabývá českým televizním gastronomickým diskurzem a sociologickou teorií vkusu P. Bourdieu. Studie odhalila, že pořady o vaření reprodukují odlišné varianty vkusu a mají tak tendenci heterogenizovat publikum na základě vkusů.

Abstract:

The subject of this master thesis is the focus on media representation of the gastronomy in Czech culinary shows broadcasted before primetime television scheme throughout the theory of taste by Pierre Bourdieu. The study made with the following chosen methods – rating analysis and quantitative content analysis – will capture firstly the viewer´s structure of these shows and secondly which variants of taste these shows produce. The thesis follows two research targets. The first one thanks to audience analysis (rating analysis) will show how strong is the position of gastronomical shows in Czech television environment and what are the basic sociodemographic characteristics of the audience. This thesis will focus mainly the characteristic of age, gender and education. The data for this analysis will be drawn through the Golem analytical software. The second target is to capture whether the gastronomical programs will establish class distinctions or whether these programs equalize call differences. This thesis shows whether gastronomical show have homogenisation or heterogenisation effect on audience based on a tastes level. This step is going to be done through to content analysis of three different shows (Prostřeno, Kluci v akci, Karolína, domácí kuchařka) and thesis will use three positions according to taste – status (low and high taste), gender (feminine and masculine taste) and nation (local and global taste). The theoretical part will focus on the Czech television gastronomical discourse and sociological theory of taste by P. Bourdieu. The study revealed that cooking show reproduce different tastes and these shows tend to heterogeneise audience based on their tastes.
