The crisis of masculinity - the importance of initiation rituals in the context of Jung's psychology

Abstract:

Kvalitativní výzkumná studie realizovaná prostřednictvím interpretativní fenomenologické analýzy čtyř polostrukturovaných rozhovorů vychází z tvrzení odborníků, kteří vnímají vymizení iniciačních rituálů jako příčinu krize mužství v dnešní společnosti. Tuto problematiku jsme ukotvili v kontextu psychologie Carla Gustava Junga a jeho pohledu na životní proměnu jedince jako cestu individuace. Výzkumný soubor tvořili čtyři muži v rozpětí 31-48 let, kteří prošli výcvikem Mužská síla a následným iniciačním rituálem Vision quest. U respondentů jsme zjišťovali, zda vnímají, že je dnešní mužství v krizi, jaké pro toto tvrzení shledávají důvody a co pro ně toto tvrzení znamená. Současně jsme zaměřili pozornost na analýzu jejich výpovědí a zkoumali jsme jejich zkušenost s prožíváním mužství a jeho aspektů v souvislosti s iniciačním rituálem, kterého se zúčastnili. V kontextu řešené problematiky jsme zjišťovali i důsledky této zkušenosti pro jejich osobní život. Za stěžejní výsledky lze považovat pozitivní účinky výcviku i rituálu, které vedly respondenty k hlubšímu poznání sebe samých a k autentičtějšímu prožívaní života a svého mužství. Dále jsme identifikovali pozitivní dopady mužské sounáležitosti panující v průběhu celého výcviku, která respondentům umožnila sdílení svého životního příběhu bez obav z negativního hodnocení a odsuzování. Identifikovali jsme vlastnosti vzorů, které jsou pro respondenty inspirací, z nichž nejdůležitější jsou: naplňování životní vize a potenciálu, využití své síly k pomoci druhým a vytyčení si hranic ve svém okolí. Respondenti vnímají, že dnešní mužství prochází částečně krizí, nicméně v této krizi spatřují pozitivní význam, který umožní mužům být více opravdovými.

Abstract:

This qualitative research study made through interpretative phenomenological analysis of four semi-structured interviews is based on claims of experts who perceive the extinction of initiation rituals as a cause of the masculinity crisis in nowaday society. We anchored this problematics in the context of Carl Gustav Jung’s psychology and his view on man’s life transformation as a process of individuation. The research consists of four men in the age of 31 to 48 years old, who participated in a training called Mužská síla (Men’s Strength) and subsequently through initiation ritual Vision Quest. The aim was to find out whether these men perceive the masculinity crisis in nowaday society, if so, what they think are the reasons and what they understand by this statement. At the same time we focused on the analysis of their responses and we examined their own experience with masculinity and its aspects in relation to the initiation ritual in which they participated. In the context of the mentioned problematic we were discovering the consequences on their lives. As a key positive effects of the training and ritual are these which guided the participants to a deeper self understanding, as well as more authentic living and experiencing their masculinity. Furthermore we identified positive effects of male affiliation present throughout the training, which enabled the participants to share the story of their life without worry or condemnation. We also identified qualities, which they feel their role models have, and sources of inspiration of these ideal men, out of which the most important are: fulfilling the life vision and potential, usage of strength to do good and demarcation, especially within their surroundings. The participants perceive that masculinity is partially going through a crisis, however, they see a positive aspect as an opportunity for nowaday men to be more authentic.
