The reflection of “heroism” and “cowardice” in printed media in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia during the periods of the first and second Heydrich affairs

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce reflektuje vnímání pojmů „hrdinství“ a „zbabělost“ optikou protektorátního tisku. Výzkumným materiálem se staly publicistické komentáře, úvodníky a reportáže, které se na stránkách českých novin deníkového charakteru objevovaly v období první a druhé heydrichiády. Podle směrnic německých úřadů novináři v této době, častěji než v jiných obdobích, užívali pojmů „hrdinství“ a „zbabělosti“ a jejich synonym v duchu fašistické propagandy. Teoretická část práce nejprve představuje využití komparativní (historicko-srovnávací) analýzy v průběhu výzkumu, stanovuje objekt, cíle a kritéria výzkumu. S využitím slovníků z konce 19. a začátku 20. století vydaných v Německu i na českém území se tato část dále zabývá dobovou představou „hrdinství“ a „zbabělosti.“ První kapitola se také orientuje na přiblížení historických událostí a okolností, za kterých protektorátní žurnalisté pracovali. Analytická část se zaměřuje na cíl komparace, tedy zkoumá konstrukce morálních kategorií „hrdinství“ a „zbabělosti“ v jednotlivých listech a obdobích. Reflektuje také, jaké skutky byly protektorátními novináři označovány za „zbabělé“ či „hrdinské“ a kdo byl do těchto kategorií zařazován. Kapitoly jsou členěny podle jednotlivých témat, kterými se zkoumané texty zabývaly.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis reflects upon the perception of the concepts of “heroism” and “cowardice” by the print media in the protectorate. Publicist commentaries, editorials and reports, which appeared on the pages of Czech daily newspapers during the first and second Heydrich’s affair, were used as the research material. Under the instruction of German officials, journalists used these concepts more during this time than in any other. First of all the theoretical part of the work explains using of the comparative-historical analysis used in the research and lays down the objective, the goals and the criteria of the research. Secondly this part considers contemporary view of “heroism” and “cowardice” by analyzing Germany and Czech dictionaries from the 19th and the first part of 20th century. The first chapter also attempts to reflect upon the historical context, the events and circumstances, in which the protectorate journalists had to work. The analytical section focuses on the goals of the comparison. This means it researches the constructions of the moral categories of “heroism” and “cowardice” in each of the chosen papers and periods. It considers who and what deeds were labeled as “heroic” or “cowardly” by protectorate journalists. The thesis is divided into sections according to the themes in the researched articles.
