Financial and audience success of European children's films

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá evropským dětským filmem a jeho cestami od námětu až po úspěšnou mezinárodní distribuci. Zaměřuje se především na detailní rozbor šesti vybraných evropských celovečerních filmů, které měly v posledních pěti letech úspěch v mezinárodní distribuci nebo na významných filmových festivalech. Na základě tematických polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s producenty těchto titulů se autorka pokouší podrobněji zmapovat vývoj, samotnou realizaci a v neposlední řadě šíření každého ze snímků. Na konkrétních datech zjišťuje, z jakých zdrojů byly jednotlivé filmy financovány, jak byly úspěšné z hlediska diváckého zájmu i z ekonomického hlediska, a zda úspěch na specializovaných filmových festivalech pro děti a mládež reálně ovlivnil zájem sales agentů a mezinárodní prodej. Výsledkem této práce je nejen analýza příkladů dobré praxe, ale také syntéza osvědčených postupů v produkci úspěšného dětského evropského filmu.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the European children's film and its journey from the subject to successful international distribution. It mainly focuses on a detailed analysis of six selected European feature films that were successful in international distribution or at important film festivals in the last five years. Using thematic semi-structured interviews with the producers of these titles, the author attempts to map in more detail the development, the realization itself and, last but not least, the distribution of each of the movies. Based on specific data, she identifies financial sources for individual films, how successful the films were in terms of audience interest and from an economic point of view, or whether success at specialized film festivals for children and youth really affected the interest of sales agents and international sales. The result of this work is not only an analysis of examples of good practice, but also a synthesis of best practices in the production of a successful European children's film.
