Moral distress among school psychologists

Abstract:

Diplomová práce zkoumá jev morálního distresu u cílové skupiny školních psychologů. Teoretická část práce shrnuje poznatky týkající se morálního distresu a přibližuje oblast školní psychologie, se zaměřením na etiku a eticky problematické situace této profese. Cílem výzkumné části bylo zmapovat, s jakými situacemi morálního distresu se školní psychologové v České republice nejvíce potýkají, zda u nich přetrvává morální reziduum, jaké faktory u nich hrají roli v prožívání morálního distresu a zda s mírou prožívaného morálního distresu souvisí copingové strategie, které používají. Tato studie smíšeného designu byla provedena pomocí online dotazníkového šetření. Byly použity modifikovaný Dotazník morálního distresu pro školní psychology a dotazník Brief COPE. Výsledky potvrzují přetrvávání morálního rezidua a popisují situace morálního distresu, které školní psychologové zažívají. Nepotvrdila se spojitost mezi situacemi morálního distresu a zjišťovanými faktory (délka praxe, stupeň vzdělání, typ zaměstnavatele). Objevila se však korelace mezi mírou morálního distresu a využitím maladaptivních strategií zvládání stresu.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis examines the phenomenon of moral distress among school psychologists in Czech Republic. The theoretical part summarizes the knowledge about moral distress and approaches the field of school psychology, focusing on ethics and ethically problematic situations of this profession. As for the empirical part, it aims to map out in which situations school psychologists deal with moral distress, analyze whether they experience a moral residue, identify factors that play a role in experiencing moral distress and whether there is a relation between the level of moral distress and coping strategies that the school psychologists use. This mixed methods design study has been conducted using an online survey questionnaire. Modified Moral Distress Questionnaire for School Psychologists and Brief COPE were used for the purpose of this research. The results confirm the persistence of moral residue and describe the situations of moral distress experienced by school psychologists. The relation between situations of moral distress and inspected factors (length of practice, education degree, type of employment) could not be confirmed. However, a correlation between the level of moral distress and the use of maladaptive coping strategies was found.
