Greek Dwelling Houses in the Classical and Hellenistic Period

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská diplomová práce se zabývá řeckými obytnými domy v době klasické a helénistické, tedy v období od 5. do 1. století před Kristem (dále jen př. Kr.). Klade si za otázku, jak tyto domy vypadaly, jaké byly jejich typické znaky, jak byly organizovány v soudobé městské zástavbě a jaká byla jejich funkce v životě jejich obyvatel. V těchto dvou obdobích se vyvinuly tři základní typy řeckých obytných domů: pastas, prostas a dům s peristylem. Typ pastas má svůj původ již v době geometrické (11. až 8. století) a je typický zvláště pro domy v Olynthu v době klasické (5. až 4. století). Jedná se o nejrozšířenější typ řeckého obytného domu. Typ prostas je charakteristický pro domy ve městě Priéné vystavěné na přelomu klasického a helénistického období. Domy s peristylem patří do helénistického období (3. až 1. století) a jsou nejlépe doloženy na ostrově Délos. Tento typ se mimo jiné stal důležitou inspirací pro stavitele obytných domů v pozdějším římském období. První část práce (2. kapitola) se věnuje poznatkům z antických pramenů o domech v klasice a helénismu. V druhé části práce se zaměřuji na stručný popis vývoje řecké obytné architektury od neolitu do doby archaické. Třetí část se zabývá systémy městské zástavby, především urbanistickým plánováním s pravoúhlým systémem ulic zavedeným v pátém století architektem Hippodamem z Milétu. Čtvrtá část pak popisuje obytné domy na třech významných lokalitách podle typů domů: v Olynthu, Priéné a na Délu.

Abstract:

This bachelors thesis deals with Greek dwelling houses in the Classical and Hellenistic period (i.e. 5th to 1st century B.C.). Its main point is to describe what the houses looked like, what were their typical features, how they were organised in contemporary city planning and what was their function in the life of their inhabitants. During these two periods, three basic types of Greek dwelling houses developed: the Pastas, the Prostas and the Peristyle House. The Pastas type has got its origins in the Geometric period (11th to 8th centrury BC). It's typical of the houses of Olynthos in the Classical period (5th to 4th century BC). This type is the most wide-spread. The Prostas type is characteristic of the houses of Priene which were built at the turn of the Classical and Hellenistic period. Peristyle houses were built in the Hellenistic period (3th to 1th century BC) and the most preserved examples can be found on the isle of Delos. By the way, this type became an important inspiration for later Roman builders of private houses. The first part of this thesis (2nd chapter) deals with the information about private houses of the Classical and Hellenistic period, which can be found in Classical literature. The second part briefly describes the development of houses from the Neolithic to Archaic period. The focus of the third part is on city planning, especially on the rectangular system of streets, which was introduced by the Greek architect Hippodamos of Miletos in the 5th century BC. The fourth part describes the houses at three important localities based on house types: Olynthos, Priene and Delos.
