Mormon Missions in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práce s názvem Mormonské misie na území ČR se věnuje fenoménu misie v Církvi Ježíše Krista Svatých posledních dnů, které představuje jedno z celé řady nových náboženských hnutí, jehož členové jsou obecně známí jako mormoni. Cílem práce bylo odhalit a čtenáře seznámit se vším, co s mormonskými misiemi souvisí. Práce se opírá o žité náboženství, tedy o pozorování konkrétní podoby misijní praxe. Z důvodu ucelenosti je navíc stručně představeno hnutí jako takové, to znamená historie vzniku, organizace, věrouka a obřady. S ohledem na téma práce je pak stručně nastíněna i historie misie ve světě s cílem poukázat na existenci dlouholeté tradice misie v rámci hnutí a na význam misie, kterého si byl vědom i zakladatel hnutí, jenž misiím vtiskl prvotní podobu. Takto tradovaná a léty utvářená podoba misie hraje stále v hnutí velkou roli a je na ni dodnes vynakládáno mnoho prostředků a úsilí. Misie se tak staly ve vnímání většinové společnosti určujícím znakem celého hnutí, slouží k jeho identifikaci a vnější reprezentaci. Z hlediska kontextuality bylo rovněž důležité popsat historii misií na našem území, poukázat na úspěchy, kterých dosahovala, a na překážky, se kterými se misionáři během svého působení na našem území setkávali. Jak již název napovídá, věnuje se práce misiím probíhajícím v současnosti na území České republiky. Práce je proto postavena na terénním výzkumu, který probíhal v prostředí brněnské odbočky, která představuje jedno ze třinácti míst, kde se Církev nachází v České republice. Na základě tohoto terénního výzkumu pak práce přináší důsledný popis misijní služby, všech jejích pravidel a jednotlivých aspektů, které s misiemi souvisejí. Práce tak odhaluje, co všechno se skrývá pod misijní činností, čímž významně rozšiřuje vnímání fenoménu misie. Obecným vyústěním je konstatování, že misie je stejnou měrou zaměřena na získávání nových členů stejně jako na aktivizaci stávajících členů. Práce přináší také popis konverze a ucelený obraz podoby Církve na našem území. Poznatky a výsledky terénního výzkumu se přitom dají rozšířit na povědomí o mormonské misii obecně a misie se ukazuje jako jedna z klíčových strategií přežití nových náboženských hnutí.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis named “Mormon Missions in the Czech Republic” deals with the phenomenon of the mission in within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It represents one of a whole range of new religious movements the members of which are commonly known as the Mormons. The objective of the thesis is to reveal and introduce the readers in everything that is connected to Mormon missions. The thesis is based on real experience of the church, thus observation of real mission practice. To make the work complex, the movement in itself is introduced including its history, organization, doctrine and ceremonies. With regard to the subject of the thesis it includes a brief history of the mission in the world to point out the longstanding tradition of missions within the movement and the significance of the mission, the founder of the movement was aware of. This traditional and long-term formed image of the mission still plays a significant role within the church and it is treated with lot of resources and effort. The missions have become a significant symbol of the church in perception of the majority public and makes for its outer representation and identification. It was also important to describe the contextual history of the missions in area of the Czech Republic and refer to accomplishments it has reached and obstacles the missionaries have had to overcome. As the title shows, the thesis deals with missions taking place in the Czech Republic on the present. The paper is therefore built on field research which was carried out at the Brno branch which represents one of the thirteen places in the Czech Republic where the church is based. Based on results of the field research the paper then brings a detailed description of the mission service, all its rules and single aspects connected to the mission. The thesis reveals everything that is hidden under the activity of the mission and through this it significantly broadens perception of the mission phenomenon. General outcome is a statement that the mission is equally focused on acquisition of new members as well as activation of existing members. It also offers description of conversion and comprehensive image of the church in the Czech Republic. The knowledge and results of the field research can be applied to general awareness of the Mormon mission and depict the mission as one of the key strategies of survivance of new religious groups.
