Women vs Men in Detective Fiction: Agatha Christie vs Arthur Conan Doyle

Abstract:

This thesis aims to compare two of the most famous detective fiction authors, namely Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle. The goal was to discover whether the differences in their writing could be attributed to their gender, what kind of female characters they created and how their sleuths - Miss Marple, Hercule Poirot and Sherlock Holmes - treated female side characters. In order to fully understand the topic, it was crucial to talk about the history and characteristics of the genre, and the position that female authors were in, specifically in Doyle's age and later in Christie' age. It was concluded that the stereotypes tied to each gender are reflected in both authors' creations. And while Doyle's writing was also influenced by the age he lived in, Christie decided to go against the flow and created unexpected heroes.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce si klade za cíl srovnání dvou nejznámějších autorů detektivní literatury, jmenovitě Agathy Christie a Arthura Conana Doyla, a to za účelem zjištění, zda lze rozdíly v jejich tvorbě připisovat pohlaví, jaky? typ žensky?ch postav tvořili a jaky? měli jejich literární detektivové, tedy slečna Marplová, Hercule Poirot a Sherlock Holmes, přístup k ženám. K porozumění tématu bylo nezbytné nejprve nastínit historii a specifika detektivní fikce, a také pozici, ve které byly ženské autorky v době Doyla a později v době Christie. Bylo dosaženo závěru, že oba spisovatelé tvořili převážně v souladu se stereotypy, které se vážou na jejich pohlaví, avšak Doylova tvorba byla ovlivněna také dobou, ve které žil, zatímco Christie se rozhodla jít proti proudu společensky?ch očekávání a vytvořila nečekané hrdiny.
