Online Activism: The Internet as a Tool for Social Change in the Context of the United States

Abstract:

Tato magisterská práce se zabývá tématem on-line sociálního aktivismu v kontextu Spojených států amerických. Práce se snaží mapovat průběh nástupu Internetu jakožto důležitého média, ve smyslu materiálním i symbolickém, a prostoru politického aktivismu v USA a pojednává o tom, jaké nese tato skutečnost důsledky na úrovni individuálního i kolektivního chápání mocenské politiky. S ohledem na teorie představené v první části potom tato práce poskytuje analýzu dvou zásadních aktivistických kolektivů – Electronic Disturbance Theater, aktivní především v 90. letech 20. století, jež představuje spojení sfér umění, aktivismu a hackerství, a hnutí Black Lives Matter, které započalo svou aktivitu v roce 2013 skrze používání Twitter hashtagu, a představuje tak fenomén aktivismu na sociálních sítích a umísťuje jej do kontextu dřívějších teorií. Cílem práce je představit hypotézu, která tvrdí, že využití Internetu jakožto média a prostoru současného sociálního aktivismu je nezbytné k vytvoření efektivní rezistence vůči nové mocenské struktuře, jež je vytvářena společně s rozvojem a integrací digitálních technologií. Hlavním argumentem je, že Internet lze použít na strukturální úrovni k vytvoření sociálního hnutí, které bude svým charakterem schopno komentovat nejen zásadní politické a sociální problémy, ale také nabízet reflexivní kritiku moderních digitálních technologií a adresovat problematické aspekty historicky tradičního chápání formy sociálních hnutí.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the topic of online social activism in the context of the political, cultural, and ideological currents in the United States. The thesis aims to map the manner in which the Internet becomes a crucial element of social activism in the United States, both as a tool and a site, and discusses the effects, on the level of individual and collective understanding of the politics of power and oppression. In the view of the historical development of the theories of the revolutionary potential of the Internet, the thesis provides analyses of two prominent activist collectives – the Electronic Disturbance Theater which emerges at the intersection of art, activism, and hacking during the early 1990’s, and the contemporary activist movement Black Lives Matter which began its activities in 2013 by means of a Twitter hashtag, thus demonstrating the contemporary phenomenon of social media activism and placing it within the context of the earlier theories. The aim of the thesis is to propose a hypothesis that the use of the Internet as a tool and a site of the contemporary social activism is necessary in order to successfully resist the new power structure emerging with the adoption and development of digital technologies. The thesis argues that the Internet can be used on a structural level to form a social movement which would have the opportunity to not only focus on the major political and social issues as a part of their agenda, but also to provide a reflective criticism of contemporary digital technologies, and to address issues inherent in the historically traditional understanding of social movements.
