Abstract:

Tato práce se věnuje tématu tzv. Middle Passage – prostřední části transatlantického obchodu s otroky – tedy jejich přepravě z afrického na americký kontinent. Nastínění problematiky paměti, zejména pamatování traumatických zážitků je klíčové pro porozumění reflexe této historické události. Poslední kapitola je věnována jednotlivým literárním autorům, kteří se ve svých dílech tímto tématem zabývají. Ačkoli každý pochází z jiné doby a jiného kulturního zázemí, spojuje je fakt, že jsou potomky lidí, kteří Middle Passage přežili, ale především jejich zájem věnovat se tomuto historickému období a připomínat ho.

Abstract:

This thesis addresses the topic of the Middle Passage which is understood as the central part of the transatlantic slave trade in which enslaved Africans were transported to the Americas. The significance of memory and, in particular, the remembering of traumatic experience then becomes crucial for understanding later reflections of this historical period. The last chapter is devoted to individual literary authors who focus on this topic in their works. Despite the fact that they come from different periods and different cultural and ideological backgrounds, they are united by their African ancestry and by their interest in remembering and commemorating this particular historical era.
