Verification of the rocket-feather effect in prices of fuel in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Námětem pro ekonomické zkoumání je v posledních několika dekádách vztah mezi cenami ropy a cenami pohonných hmot. Již na přelomu mi-lénia bylo zjištěno, že vztah mezi těmito dvěma komoditami není syme-trický. Postupem času se této asymetrii začalo říkat rocket-feather efekt. V této práci jsem se věnoval ověření, zda se tento efekt nachází i na trhu s pohonnými hmotami v České republice. Také jsem identifiko-val úroveň dodavatelského řetězce, kde tento efekt vzniká. Pro oba tyto úkoly jsem použil VAR modely a funkce impulsních odezev.

Abstract:

The relationship between crude oil prices and fuel prices has been the subject of economic investigation over the last few decades. At the turn of the millennium, it was recognised that the relationship between these two commodities is not symmetrical. Over time, this asymmetry came to be called the rocket-feather effect. In this thesis, I set out to verify whether this effect is also present in the Czech fuel market. I also identified the level of the supply chain where this effect arises. For both these tasks I used VAR models and impulse response functions.
