Application of Artificial Neural Networks in Music

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá generováním hudby pomocí neuronových sítí, které se již dostaly do stadia praktické využitelnosti a v současné době se stávají předmětem komerční a umělecké činnosti. Cílem práce je zmapovat a analyzovat možnosti nového nástroje tvorby hudby, kterým jsou umělé neuronové sítě. První část práce zahrnuje otázky definice, modelování a učení neuronových sítí, charakteristiky základních druhů a stručný popis zásadních faktů vývoje. Také vysvětluje vztah neuronových sítí k dalším souvisejícím pojmům jako jsou umělá inteligence, strojové učení a hluboké učení. Druhá část seznamuje s historií automatického generování hudby pomocí počítače a počátky využití neuronových sítí k tomuto účelu. Dále rozebírá aktuální možnosti a principy jejich aplikace v hudební praxi. Třetí část popisuje a analyzuje sedm softwarových nástrojů pro automatickou tvorbu hudby (Magenta, AIVA, Jukedeck, Amper Music, GRUV, WaveNet, FlowMachines). Na základě této analýzy jsou pak definovány výhody, praktické a teoretické problémy i rizika spojená s využitím této nové technologie v hudebním průmyslu.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with generating music using neural networks, which have already reached the stage of practical usability and are currently becoming the subject of commercial and artistic activities.The aim of this work is to map and analyse the abilities of new instrument for creating music, which are artificial neural networks. The first part of the work includes issues of definition, modelling and learning of neural networks, characteristics of basic types and brief description of essential facts of development. It also explains the relationship of neural networks to other related concepts such as artificial intelligence, machine learning and deep learning. The second part introduces the history of automatic music generation using computer and the beginnings of neural networks’ application for this purpose. It goes on discussing the current possibilities and principles of their application in music. The third part describes and analyses seven software tools for automatic music generating (Magenta, AIVA, Jukedeck, Amper Music, GRUV, WaveNet, FlowMachines). Based on this analysis, the advantages, practical and theoretical problems and the risks related with the use of this new technology in music industry are then defined.
