Deserted fortified medieval villages in the Southern Moravia region in terms of non-destructive archaeological methods

Abstract:

Jeden z klíčových aspektů k bližšímu poznání středověké společnosti je výzkum zaniklých středověkých vesnic. Dálkový archeologický průzkum, písemné prameny, tak i výzkum historických map ukázal, že velké množství středověkých vesnic v oblasti jižní Moravy disponovalo nějakou formou vnějšího ohrazení. Hlavní část předkládané práce sestává z 9 případových studií, z nichž každá reprezentuje výsledky nedestruktivního výzkumu – především založeného na využití geofyzikálních metod, jedné konkrétní zaniklé středověké ohrazené vsi. Cílem práce bylo získat nové informace o podobě a vývoji vrcholně středověkých vesnic z území jižní Moravy, a to právě skrze výzkum vesnických sídel, jejichž intravilán byl v minulosti vymezen nějakou formou vnějšího ohrazení a zároveň i blíže poznat tento specifický typ lokalit, a to jak stran možné funkce a podoby vnějšího ohrazení, tak i z hlediska toho, odkud a jak se tento typ lokalit mohl na naše území dostat.

Abstract:

Research of deserted medieval villages is a key aspect of improving knowledge of the medieval society. Aerial photography and studies of historical written sources conducted in the 1990s, as well as research of historical maps and analysis of the latest satellite and vertical aerial photography images showed that a high number of medieval villages in the South Moravian region had some form of external enclosure in the past. The main part of the presented thesis consists of 9 case studies, each representing one deserted enclosed medieval village, where non-destructive research was carried out – primarily by using geophysical methods in the form of large-scale magnetometry. The aim of the surveys, as well as the presented thesis, was to obtain additional information about these sites and to obtain better general knowledge about the form and genesis of medieval villages, individual rural houses as well as the form of extravillain and the relationships between the individual components in the settlement structure in the followed region of south Moravia.
