School climate as a theoretical and empirical problem

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo uspořádat poznatky týkající se sociálního klimatu škol, historie jeho zkoumání a podat přehled současných přístupů ke zkoumání klimatu. Klima školy je rovněž představováno v kontextu relevantních příbuzných koncepcí jako je kultura školy a i v širších sociálně psychologických souvislostech, jako je teorie sociální identity, sociálních reprezentací a teorie postojů, které ukazují obecné aspekty vnímání, prožívání a komunikace vnitřního prostředí školy jeho aktéry. Empirickou část práce tvoří tři výzkumné studie. První dvě se z různých úhlů pohledu zaměřují na to, jak žáci subjektivně vnímají své školní sociální prostředí, zatímco třetí studie se pokusila postihnout formou analýzy produktu komunikační projevy aktérů školního prostředí ve specifickém prostředí internetové prezentace školy. Cílem první studie bylo postihnout formou zkrácené longitudinální studie vývojový aspekt názorů adolescentů na vnitřní prostředí školy. Nárůst kritičnosti k parametrům školního prostředí (jako je např. demokratičnost či vnímaná podpora ze strany učitelů) v průběhu adolescence ukazují nárůst konkrétních projevů zvýšené kritičnosti adolescentů ke školnímu prostředí a změnu vztahu k autoritám. Výsledky jsou významné z hlediska interpretace výsledků měření klimatu školy i pro ověřování efektivity intervenčních zásahů Cílem druhé studie bylo poukázat na fakt, že ani v rámci věkově homogenní skupiny nemusí být sociální zkušenost s prostředím školy analogická a že jedním z klíčových prvků určujících naše vnímání sebe sama, svých problémů i sociálního prostředí školy je naše sociální pozice. Ukazuje se také, že to jakým způsobem žák reaguje na problémy ovlivňuje to, jak ho spolužáci vnímají a hodnotí. Celek sociální pozice žáka ve školní třídě (a škole) zároveň ovlivňuje jeho možnosti reakcí na problémy. Třetí prezentovaná studie se zaměřila na existující internetová prezentace škol jako svébytného komunikačního kanálu, který může odrážet aktuální problémy a způsob komunikování o nich v rámci konkrétní školy (např. vztahová dimenze, dimenze otevřenosti, participace apod.). Současný stav internetových prezentací škol rozhodně ale není ideální z hlediska běžných uživatelů, ani z hlediska výzkumu. Jen polovina škol z reprezentativního vzorku má svou prezentaci a z toho jen 3% prezentací je komunikačně otevřených vzhledem k žákům i rodičům.Internetová prezentace školy tak z hlediska zkoumání sociálního klimatu školy v současnosti představuje spíše téma s budoucím potenciálem a téma pro kvalitativní přístup ke klimatu školy při sledování procesu internetové prezentace.

Abstract:

The goal of the thesis is to compile the current knowledge about school climate, its research history and to present an overview of the current approaches toward its study. School climate is introduced in the context of relevant related approaches such as school culture and in the more general social-psychological context of social identity theory, social representations theory and attitude theory that demonstrate the agents’ general perceptual, experiential and communicational aspects of school environment. The empirical part comprises three studies. The first two approach from different perspectives pupils’ subjective perceptions of their school environment. The third tries to apply product analysis to the communication behavior of various agents in the school environment in the specific context of school web presentation. The first study aims to demonstrate the developmental aspect of adolescents’ school perceptions through a cross-sectional short term longitudinal study. The increasing trend of criticizing various aspects of the school environment (e.g. democratic approach from the teachers or support from teachers) during adolescence shows how adolescents grow more critical towards school and their changing relationship toward authority. The results are important for future measurement of school climate and for the evaluations of various school interventions. The second study aims to show that not even within a homogenous group the social experience of school environment may not be the same and that one of the key elements determining the perceptions of ourselves, our problems and school environment is our social position. It also shows that the way pupils react to their problems affects how he or she is perceived and evaluated by the classmates. The social position in the class and in the school also affects his or her possibilities of dealing with problems. The third study focuses on the existing web presentations of schools as a specific communication channel that may reflect the current issues in school and the way they are communicated within a specific school (e.g. relational dimension, openness, participation etc.). The current state of school web presentations is by no means ideal neither from the perspective of their intended user nor form the perspective of researchers. Only a half of the random sample of schools actually has a web presentation and only 3% are open for bidirectional communication with pupils and their parents. This makes school web presentation only a promise for future investigations of school climate and an opportunity to qualitatively study the process of its development in a particular school.
