Mineralogy and Zr bonding within uranium mineralization at the Břevniště deposit

Abstract:

Tato práce byla zaměřena na získání moderních poznatků o distribuci a vazbě uranu a zirkonia v mineralizovaných sedimentech ložiska Břevniště. Studie provedené na této lokalitě v průběhu více než 30 let trvajícího průzkumu ukázaly, že schopnosti tehdejších analytických přístrojů, resp. zavedený metodický přístup, dovolily získat pouze omezené množství kvalitních informací. S ohledem na nízký objem studovaného materiálu a jeho dostupnost, bylo podstatou řešení předkládané práce využití nedestruktivních metod. Jejich přesným výběrem bylo možné eliminovat řadu obtíží, které skrývá tento typ mineralizace, např. jemnozrnnou povahu a rozptýlení částic v základní hmotě sedimentů nebo nízkou koncentraci U a Zr. K řešení tohoto problému byly aplikovány spektroskopické metody schopné pracovat v plně automatickém režimu, vysokém rozlišení a generovat rozsáhlé soubory spektrálních dat. Navržený model kombinuje moderní metody a přístupy s výrazným analytickým potenciálem, umožňující zhodnotit mineralogicko-geochemické vlastnosti uranonosných pískovců. Pomocí RTG fluorescenční a laserové spektroskopie byla zkoumána distribuce uranu, zirkonia a doprovodných prvků, stejně jako jejich vzájemná vazba. Identifikace minerálních fází byla provedena prostřednictvím plně automatického skenovacího elektronového mikroskopu s integrovaným energiově-disperzním systémem, a ověřena pomocí práškové RTG difrakce. Kromě těchto analytických nástrojů bylo k analýze dat využito také vícerozměrné statistické analýzy a Kohonenových map. Sledováním distribuce uranu a zirkonia byla prokázána extrémně silná lineární závislost mezi oběma prvky. Podobně silný se ukázal také vztah U-Zr a některých doprovodných prvků (As, Nb, Fe, Sr, Pb). Spojitost mezi distribucí těchto prvků a minerálními výplněmi, tvořenými jílovou matrix, Fe oxidy, oxihydroxidy a sulfidy nebo organickou hmotou byla zjištěna díky vizualizaci minerálních fází v podobě distribučních map. Z hlediska minerálního složení byla U-Zr vazba pozorována především v hydrozirkonu a „směsných gelech“, které představují neklasifikované sloučeniny na hranici pevné fáze. V obou případech se jedná o slabě krystalické fáze se značným uranonosným potenciálem. Inovativní pohled na chemické složení a vazbu prvků v uranových rudách ložiska Břevniště přineslo statistické zpracování spektrálních dat. Tento přístup umožnil přesněji popsat distribuci uranu a rozlišit možné asociace prvků v heterogenním materiálu. Hlubší zkoumání dosažených výsledků a použitého metodického přístupu odhalilo skryté informace v souboru naměřených dat týkající se distribuce Nb-Fe-Ti, a jejich vazby s U-Zr, v tomto typu mineralizace. Provedeným výzkumem bylo dosaženo účinné pre-koncentrace studovaného materiálu, která poskytla relevantní data pro detailní mineralogický výzkum. V takto komplexním rudním materiálu se proces nedestruktivního mapování ukázal jako stěžejní a široce použitelný pro prvkovou charakterizaci rud s nízkou kovnatostí. Nové možnosti vizualizace chemických dat a tvorba prediktivních modelů distribuce tak otevřely cestu k diskuzi o podmínkách transportu prvků a složení hydrotermálního roztoku.

Abstract:

This study was designed to gain modern knowledge on the distribution and correlation of uranium and zirconium in mineralized sedimentary rocks of the Břevniště deposit. Studies conducted at this locality during the over 30-years’ research have shown that the amount of high-quality data obtained was limited by the possibilities of the analytical devices of that time, i.e., by the established methodical approach. Taking into account the small volumes of studied material and its availability, solution of the present task was lying in the employment of non-destructive methods. Their precise selection could eliminate many problems related to this type of mineralization: e.g., the fine-grained character and dispersal of particles in the matrix of sedimentary rocks, or the low concentrations of U and Zr. This problem was addressed by the application of spectroscopic methods working in fully automated regime with high precision and generating extensive files of spectral data. The proposed model combines modern methods and approaches with a considerable analytical potential. As such, it allows the assessment of mineralogical and geochemical properties of uraniferous sandstones. The distribution of U, Zr and accompanying elements, much like their mutual relationships, were studied using X-ray fluorescence and laser spectroscopy. Identification of mineral phases was accomplished via a fully automated scanning electron microscope with an integrated energy-dispersive system, and verified by powder X-ray diffraction. Besides these analytical tools, data analysis also employed multivariate statistical analysis and Kohonen maps. Identification of the distributions of U and Zr proved an extremely tight linear correlation between these two elements. Similarly tight relations were found also between U-Zr and some accompanying elements (As, Nb, Fe, Sr, Pb). A correlation between the distribution of these elements and mineral fills formed by clay matrix, Fe oxides, oxyhydroxides and sulphides, or organic matter was found using visualization of mineral phases in the form of distribution maps. As for mineral composition, the U-Zr correlation was observed especially in hydrozircon and “mixed gels”, which represent unclassified substances at the solid phase boundary. Both mineral phases are poorly crystalline, with a considerable uranium-bearing potential. An innovative look onto the chemical composition and element correlations in uranium ores of the Břevniště deposit was obtained through statistical processing of spectral data. This approach allowed to describe U distribution in much more detail and to distinguish between possible element associations in heterogeneous material. A thorough inspection of the data measured and the methodical approach applied revealed hidden information in the measured data set on the distribution of Nb-Fe-Ti, and their correlation with U-Zr, in this type of mineralization. An effective pre-concentration of the studied material was achieved by the above outlined research, providing relevant data for a detailed mineralogical investigation. In ore material of such complexity, the process of non-destructive mapping proved to be of utmost importance and wide applicability for elemental characteristics of low-grade ores. The new possibilities of chemical data visualization and predictive distribution model creation thus opened a discussion on the conditions of element transport and the composition of the hydrothermal fluid.
