First Nations' Alterity expressions in Quebec francophone litterature

Abstract:

This thesis deals with three works of fracophone authors from Quebec (L.Hamelin: Cowboy, R. Lalonde: Le dernier été des Indiens a B. Assiniwi: Le bras coupé), focusing on the image of otherness (alterity) of amerindian characters. Despite the definition of alterity in phenomenological context, based preferentially on the voice of the majority, our analysis of the texts of the novels shows a very wide usage of a stereotyped image of the other in his physical and mental traits, which excessively emphasizes his exclusion. Beside the voice of the majority, the image of the otherness is completed by the components of time, space and language, where the cultural particualrities of nord-american Indians play an important role.

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce analyzuje tři frankofonní díla quebeckých autorů (L.Hamelin: Cowboy, R. Lalonde: Le dernier été des Indiens a B. Assiniwi: Le bras coupé) z hlediska zobrazení jinakosti (alterity) postav Indiánů. Ačkoliv je v kontextu fenomenologie alterita (skupiny či jednotlivce) definována na základě hlasu většiny, rozbor románových textů poukazuje na časté použití stereotypních obrazů fyzična i duše druhého, které nadměrně zdůrazňují jeho exkluzi. Kromě hlasu většiny zde dotvářejí obraz jinakosti také prvky prostoru, času a jazyka, v nichž se projevují specifické rysy kultury severoamerických Indiánů.
