Explicitation shifts in Czech literary translations

Abstract:

Cílem předkládané práce je srovnávací analýza českých překladů vybraných anglických literárních děl se zaměřením na tzv. překladové univerzálie, mezi něž lze zařadit překladové explicitace a implicitace. Definice pojmu explicitace a implicitace, jejich typologie a funkce jsou rozpracované v teoretické části s odkazem na odbornou literaturu. Během překladatelského procesu dochází k explicitačním posunům, jejichž výsledkem je cílový text, který je explicitnější než text zdrojový. V případě opakovaných nebo pravidelných výskytů explicitačních posunů v překladu, může se tento jev stát charakteristickým rysem jednotlivých překladatelů. Prvním úkolem empirického výzkumu v této práci je zaměřit se na explicitační chování tří překladatelů s cílem zjistit, zda a s jakou frekvencí se v jejich překladech vyskytují explicitační posuny a jakým způsobem tyto posuny přispívají k jejich individuálnímu překladatelskému profilu. Srovnávací analýza využívá paralelní korpusy zdrojových a cílových textů, které obsahují materiál potřebný k určení explicitačních tendencí ve vybraných překladech. Analyzovaný materiál sestává z úryvků paralelních textů tří překladatelů, Zdeňka Urbánka, Bohumily Kubertové-Zátkové a Hany Žantovské, v celkovém rozsahu 30 000 slov přeloženého textu. Druhým úkolem je vypracovat koncepci typologie explicitačních posunů podle Hallidayova konceptu metafunkcí jazyka a roztřídit explicitace a implicitace podle významových typů na ideační, interpersonální a textové. Splnění obou úkolů umožní provést kvantitativní i kvalitativní analýzu výskytu explicitací a implicitací v cílových textech. Výsledky analýzy lze následně vyhodnotit na základě frekvence jednotlivých typů posunů v rámci celého korpusu, typu překladového posunu (explicitace nebo implicitace) a typu významu podle Hallidayova konceptu metafunkcí jazyka. Získaná empirická data přispějí k identifikaci explicitačního chování jednotlivých překladatelů, jež může být základem jejich překladatelského profilu.

Abstract:

The objective of the thesis is to conduct a comparative analysis of Czech translations of selected English literary works with a focus on translation universals primarily translation explicitation and implicitation shifts. Definitions of the term explicitation and implicitation, their typology and functions are elaborated in the theoretical part with reference to an overview of the literature on translation studies and linguistics. During the translation process, explicitation shifts are likely to occur, resulting in a target text that is more explicit than a source text. In the case of repeated or regular occurrences of explicitation shifts in the translation, the phenomenon may become a characteristic feature of individual translators’ profiles. The first task of the empirical research in the thesis is to focus on the explicitation behaviour of three translators to determine whether and with what frequency explicitation shifts occur in their translations and how these shifts contribute to their individual translation profiles. Comparative analysis uses parallel corpora of the source and target texts, which contain the material needed to determine explicitation tendencies in selected translations. The analysed material consists of excerpts from parallel texts by three translators, Zdeněk Urbánek, Bohumila Kubertová-Zátková and Hana Žantovská, with a total of 30,000 words of translated text. The second task is to develop a concept of typology of explicitation shifts according to Halliday’s concept of language metafunctions and to classify explicitations and implicitations according to semantic types into ideological, interpersonal and textual ones. The completion of both tasks enables quantitative and qualitative analyses of the occurrence of explicitation and implicitation shifts in the target texts. The results of the analyses are then evaluated on the basis of the frequency of individual types of shifts within the whole corpus, the type of translation shift (explicitation or implicitation) and the type of meaning according to Halliday’s concept of language metafunctions. The achieved empirical data contribute to the identification of the explicitation behaviour of individual translators, which can be considered the basis of their translation profiles.
