Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to analyse the emigration from the Czech lands to America until the year 1918. It depicts the emigration from Bohemia and Moravia since 15th century but focuses mainly on emigration during the 19th century. The thesis deals with both individual emigrants and the waves of mass emigration. The political, economic and religious situation in the Czech lands is depicted in the thesis. The main part of the thesis deals with the reasons that compelled many Czechs to emigrate and depicts the areas in America where emigrants usually settled. The process of obtaining the permission to leave the Czech lands and the journey across the ocean is also illustrated in the thesis. After emigrants arrived in America they had to endure many examinations at the immigration centre before they could settle in America. The thesis illustrates their hard beginnings in America both in the city and prairies. The emigrants? desire for the Czech culture in America led to establishing many associations typical of the Czech country.

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je analyzovat emigraci z českých zemí do Ameriky do roku 1918. Práce se zabývá emigrací z Čech a Moravy již od 15. století, ale zaměřuje se především na emigraci během 19. století. Práce pojednává jak o jednotlivých emigrantech, tak i o masových vlnách emigrace. Je zde také vyobrazena politická, ekonomická a náboženská situace v českých zemích. Převážná část práce se zabývá důvody, které donutily obyvatele českých zemí k emigraci a zobrazuje oblasti, ve kterých se emigranti v Americe nejčastěji usazovali. Práce také znázorňuje postup jakým emigranti získávali povolení k vystěhování se z českých zemí a cestu emigrantů přes oceán. Poté co emigranti připluli do Ameriky museli podstoupit několik testů, než jim bylo dovoleno se v Americe usadit. Práce znázorňuje těžké začátky emigrantů jak v amerických městech, tak i na venkově. Touha emigrantů po české kultuře vedla k založení mnoha spolků typických pro český národ.
