Metamorphoses of “The End of Carnival” during the second half of 20th century. Analysis of four performances from 1964, 1989, 1997 and 2008.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá českým dramatem Josefa Topola - Konec masopustu a jeho čtyřmi inscenacemi. Topolova divadelní hra z 60. let je specifická jak svou vnější stavbou (je označována jako lyrizované drama), ale také stavbou významovou. Obsahem práce jsou analýzy čtyř inscenací této hry. Jednotlivé inscenace se nacházejí v různých historických momentech a jsou inscenovány představiteli různých generací. Práce se zabývá inscenací Otomara Krejči z Národního divadla Praha (1964), dále analyzuje inscenaci Karola Skladana ze Západočeského divadla z Chebu (1989), inscenaci Hany Burešové z Divadla Dlouhé v Praze (1997) a inscenaci Štěpána Páca (2008). Analýzy se týkají dramaturgicko- režijní koncepce, podoby scény, jednotlivých hereckých postav a dalších scénických složek. Zahrnují též reflexi dobových kritických ohlasů. Cílem práce bylo objevit skrze tyto analýzy onu potencionalitu smyslu díla - dle teoretika M.Jankoviče – který není uzavřený, ale neustále se znovu v různých situacích otevírá a děje.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with a piece of drama by Czech playwright Josef Topol, End of Carnival (Konec Masopustu), and it analyses four different stagings of the text. End of Carnival is specific both regarding its form of so called lyricized drama and its structure of significances; it has a special place in Czech post war theatre. The productions chosen for an analysis were created by four different generations, thus they are set in four different moments of the Czech history. First, the thesis discusses a production by Otomar Krejča (who it was originally written for); then a production by Karol Skladan (Cheb Theatre, 1989); a production by Hana Burešová (Divadlo v Dlouhé Theatre Prague, 1997); and finally a production by Štěpán Pácl (2008). Reconstructing available period materials and documents, the thesis focuses stepwise on various parts of the productions in order to discover through the analysis a potential of End of Carnival, which is according to a literary scholar Milan Jankovič, never closed: it is being constantly revisited.
